HAPPY NEW YEAR

A pretty fair crowd today to start off the new year-- let's try to keep it up.  And we were honored by three guests from the Greater Park Hill Sertoma Club:
Larry Weir, Betty Sparrow and Barbara Daniels, plus applicants Bob Buckland and Zach Harder.  Your reporter can not remember a fine for Table One today.  If true, we can't let that happen again.  In fact, fines were sparse today.  It was evident today that we are a think ahead group, in that the date of the Cajun Cookout was announced to be August 2nd .... so be sure to get that on your calendar now.  The Handshake prize went to Dean Hiss, while a special prize was awarded to Mike Ballew (the object appeared to be a pink dog key-chain - there has to be more to this story).  The Pot O Gold went to Bob Lutes.

Sertoman of the Day
The Sertoman of the Day was our King Emeritus Orian Hunter.  He notes that he is the only Democrat in the club, or at east the only one to say so out loud.  Appearing on the scene in 1950,  he attended school in the far north, graduating with a BA fro Concordia College in "71".  He also has a MS in Counseling.  There was no claim of military service and there was no indication of whether his schools remain standing.  Where is Vierthaler when we really need him?  Among the further babbling, there was reference to training for a new career, like being a high school principal.  He did say he now has a Class D License.  Not sure what that is but I do know a Class C license will allow you to drive a truck.  Married to Ellen for a quarter of a century (she must be a truly remarkable person to have handled the feat).  Rumor has it that Orian now will be providing guidance and counseling at the Englewood Alternative School.  Congratulations!  It's good to see him with real work for a change.  (Working as a Master of Ceremonies doesn't pay that well).  Thanks for everything, Orian.
Program
Today's Program was a fine presentation by Sheri Betzer, who is not only a CPA, but also a CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner).  Her firm provides litigation support, forensic accounting, and fraud investigation, as well as related support, consultation and training.  A grad of Mesa State, she has background with the IRS and has had her own practice for 13 years.  Sheri provided insight into individuals and situations that need to be looked at occasionally.  Most individuals involved in fraud are in position of trust where opportunities present themselves, where motives arise (divorce, ill children, etc.)  and where individuals are able to rationalize the bad behavior.  Three areas where fraud  conditions come up:  Phantom Pay rolling, Commission Frauds, and Workman's Cop Scams.  She offered a few tips:  Segregate duties, look for paychecks where no deductions are taken, and check record that are seldom if ever reviewed.  Sheri's presentation was most interesting and useful. Thanks Sheri.
