This Week's Reporter - Dave Miley

The SERTOMA Freedom Week Program was as it always is, an inspiring  affair.  This years event was outstanding in its organization, content and presentation.  Sixteen Arapahoe SERTOMANS enjoyed the program launched by the impressive posting of the colors by the Marine Corps Color Guard, followed by the invocation by our Regional Vice President, John Ziegler. After introduction of the head table guests and officials, remarks were heard from Governors Dave Oppenheim, and Pat Diesing and International President Bill Stanage.  President Bill gave an inspiring talk exalting the Freedom Week Program.  Proclamations from Colorado Governor Bill Owens and Littleton Mayor John Ostermiller officially declared the third week of February "Freedom Week" in the State of Colorado and in jm the City of Littleton.  Next was the announcement of all the winning students.  Each of them received a one hundred dollar savings bond.  Eighteen clubs sponsored thirty-two schools this year.  The Arapahoe Club sponsored five schools: Campus, Columbine, Euclid, Mracheck, and Platte River.  Overall winners were Katie Hall from Everett for the Front Range District, and Elissa Valusec from the Central Colorado District.

Former Denver Bronco running back Reggie Rivers not only entertained us as guest speaker, he zeroed in on the meaning and importance of the Freedom Week Program.  He praised the participating students for their insight, talent, and patriotism.

The entire program has been enhanced the last two years by the ambiance of the El Jebel Shrine facility.  The program was well organized, meaningful, and progressed quickly in a timely fashion. Congratulations are in order for Chairman Rick Simons, C. J. Farr, and Ray Franks.  Thanks to Governors David Oppenheim and Pat Desing for overseeing such a fine event.

Arapahoe members attending were: Rick Jacobus, Bill Worth, Nick Morrone, Dave Miley, Joe Geers, Rich Carlson, Dick Enslow, Ed Bezjak, Tim Pollak, Bob Buckland, Bill Parchen, Mike Magee, Kirk Hon, Fred Downs, Gus Szala, and Phil Grimm.

Found on the dead body of a Confederate soldier during the Civil War:

  • I asked God for strength that I might achieve- I was made weak that I might learn humility to obey.

  • I asked God for health that I might do greater things-  I was given infirmity that I might do better things.

  • I asked for riches that I might be happy- I was given poverty that I might be wise.

  • I asked for power that I might have the praise of men- I was given weakness that I might feel the need for God.
  • I asked for all things that I might enjoy life.  - I was given life that I might enjoy all things.
  • I got nothing that I asked for-but everything I had hoped for...
  • Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.  I am among all men most richly blessed.
