This Week In Review

Dave Miley's recent hospitalization did not affect his voice as he led the song with enthusiasm and in tune-more or less.  I didn't hear who started the pledge but it was recited in good form.  Brother Worth returned thanks for our food.   Victoria had a traffic encounter which  broke her tail light and made her late.  this did not deter famished Sertoman's from helping them selves to glutinous proportions.  Happily Victoria's arrival saved the day and many helped themselves to seconds of delicious beef stew, fat grandma biscuits and salad.  President Grimm called the meeting to order and asked for announcements.  He had to field many fines and few announcements.  Ed Bezjak fined Table 1 $.25 each for having an unauthorized guest - Lloyd Steinmann.  Then, Bezjak reported E-team deposited $6,200 and paid out $1,548 for Progressive Bingo.  Mason reminded all that A-Team is up on the 14th of May.  There were a couple of fines that I didn't hear- something about Mason wearing an old worn-out ugly, zipped-up jacket during lunch, while seated next to guest
Russ Fuikes.  Then I think   Mason fined Bill Worth for not sitting with his guest.  I'm not sure President Grimm's ruling.  Doug Harder asked golfers to meet after lunch to draw straws to se who will play in golf matches offered by other Sertoma Clubs on June 9th and June 12th.  These matches are sanctioned by Arapahoe and some of the expense will be paid by the club.  See Doug Harder.  It was good to see Bill Parchen back from his heart repair and looking well.  Now, if he can keep his feet off of his oxygen tube he may try golf later.
Sertoman of the Day
SOD of the Day-  Bruce Elsey.  Bruce was born in 1951 at Garden City, KS.  He graduated from high school in 1970 (still standing) and from Kansas State in 1977, a certified Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.  He met Kathleen, also a student at Kansas State and they were married in 1976.  Bruce first practiced as a large animal veterinarian in Colby, KS before coming to Englewood, where he rented space from Carl Duncan, (one of our guests today).

Bruce operates the All Cat Clinic at 3998 South Broadway in Englewood.

Kathleen gave birth to twin boys in 1983.  The twins are now students at Kansas State, where they are majoring in Landscape Architecture.  Bruce seldom misses a meeting and he has the distinction of paying more late fines than any other Arapahoe member.  Steve Bolyard was his sponsor and Don Marshall won his $5, Meow.

Program Chair, Zack Harder introduced Dave Parks, Spokesman for Youth Sports Programs, Englewood Parks and Recreation Department.  Dave enthusiastically presented an overview of many of the participation-based sports programs available for boys and girls 3-17 years of age.  He mentioned  basketball, volleyball, baseball, track, dodge and kickball, tennis and more.  His emphasis is to start a child as young as possible and be certain he or she has a good experience or risk the child turning away from sport.  Many of Englewood's youth are from middle class families who are able to play at the City's facilities free.  All programs have paid and volunteer personnel from older groups and adults who work with the younger troops, teaching rules and skills at play.  Many plans are in the works to expand the Englewood Recreation Center, adding water sports by next summer.  Dave is an enthusiastic well informed spokes man for Englewood's Parks and Recreation Department.  We enjoyed his program.

Thoughts to Ponder

    M - O - T - H - E - R

space "M" is for the million things she gave me,
space "O" means only that she's growing old,
space "T" is for the tears she shed to save me,
space "H" is for her heart of purest gold;
space "E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
space "R" means right, and right she'll always be,

Put them all together, they spell
A word that means the world to me.

Howard Johnson (c. 1915)
