THIS WEEK IN REVIEW ....April 13, 2017
This weeks Reporter- Don Smith

news_l3.gif  Dave Miley          Gary Athey    news_l5.gif  Doug Harder

Guests:   Alice Perkins, Jim’s wife; Vicky Oren, Jim’s LSC

FINES:  To Benton for improper training of the President.

Birthdays:   n/a

Announcements:    Benton talked to Norm and he is doing a lot better and may be back to lunch next week. Scott talked to Dean and he is doing fine, he just doesn’t want to leave the place he is at but does say “hi” to all. Dean and Schlageter are no longer members of the club.

Miley is in contact with people at Aspen Grove for us to set up our Lemonade Stand a few times a year. He will know more later.

There is a new link on our Home Web Page explaining our Foundation and how you can either Donate to the Foundation or Request charitable funding. Just go to the Home Page at http://arapahoe-sertoma.org/ and click the button on the left labeled “Foundation”. If you have any other ideas pertaining to this, let Tim know. As soon as I get it, I will post a list of who has received donations.

Doug Harder had his Past Presidents meeting lunch 2 weeks ago. They are looking to fill the Officer positions for the next year and may have to have some members stay on the job they now hold or take another position OR you may be asked to do a job you just did a couple years ago. Since our membership is going down, we need all the help we can get so if you are an "eat & burper", sitting there enjoying yourself, step up and help out. Names were put to the positions and those lucky people will be contacted. The club is only as strong as the membership wants it to be. The Board is trying to get assistants to help out so if you feel that a certain position requires too much time, the assistant will be able to help.

Money raised in the past “Walk’s” that was held a couple years ago and the money that is sitting in the bank that hasn’t been donated yet may get a new home.

news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:    Bob Stein said we have all read or heard his bio so he gave a little history of the club and when he was the President and Gold Coat recipient. Bob is a Denver native, is the oldest of five kids and has been up here since 1974, giving his life history. Bob is married to Diane with 50 years under his belt, has one daughter, one son-in-law and one grandchild (keeps it simple that way). Gary Castle got him into Sertoma. Bob has been past President (85-86) – Gold Coat, and past District Governor in 1989. Back then, there was only one District with 17 clubs which kept him busy trying to visit all of them on a timely manner.

Bob decided to enlisted in the Navy in 1960 instead of finishing college and took training to be a Fire Control Officer (they don’t put out fires, they compute all kinds of things before firing the big guns). About half way through that he got into submarine school. The first part of the training was to learn about every system on the boat. He was able to get duty in Pearl Harbor. He was assigned to the third nuclear sub ever built, the USS Seadragon SSN-584. He then got to go back to school to learn the fire control systems on a new sub in Long Beach. Bob figured out that the more schools he went to, the less time he would be on a ship. He was the junior member of the crew so he was almost an E-5 but still got stuck with mess duty (this was around 1961).

This was during the cold war so their duty was to keep an eye on the Russians. The only limit on their duty at sea was how much food they could stuff on board. So he got to go to the North Pole, test weapons, chase Russians, learn to dive, and all other sorts of fun stuff, not to forget that he went around the world about 22 times. He didn’t want to leave Hawaii but he eventually did and came back home and started doing new systems for a new sub. He was then stationed in Spain and got to patrol the Mediterranean. He eventually took the test to go to E-8 and passed, but declined the commission and got out of the service. After the service, Bob started several banks in the area and started a Car Wash with another Sertoman. We just learned the Bob has sold the Car Wash, no wonder there weren’t any quarters on the table.

Bob shared some information about the club and it’s members when he was the President. Some names were familiar to the older members but lost to the newer ones.   Listen to Bob Stein.mp3

Program: Doug Harder introduced a former Bronco’s player and now a realtor for Keller Williams Realty DTC, Billy Van Heusen.

Billy Van Heusen (born August 27, 1946) was a professional football punter and wide receiver who played for the Denver Broncos from 1968 to 1976. On Oct 6, 1968, he tied a franchise record with 12 punts against the Cincinnati Bengals

Billy Van Heusen will tell you that he liked Denver so much that he never left. The former Denver Broncos split end and punter has made the Mile High region his home, even now some 33 years after his playing days ended.

“Nobody wanted to mess with an injured knee,” Van Heusen said of not being drafted. “A number of teams offered me a free-agent tryout, but knowing Coach Saban and his staff I figured I had a decent chance here than I did anywhere else. (more at below link)
