FINES:  The President for asking Orian to speak.

Birthdays:   n/a

Announcements:   I was just informed by the President that Glenn Combellick has won the District Sertoman of the Year award. Congratulations Glenn, you deserve it.

With all the lady’s present today, Doug had a pretty clean joke. Listen to Doug’s joke.mp3

At the Board Meeting today, we asked for ideas for this year’s Christmas Party. Do we want an adult only party, a party with adults & kids? How about holding it at the Elks club? Do we want a $10 gift exchange???? What about a band or DJ, what type of music (one idea was 40’s music). We need ideas of what YOU want so write down some ideas and give them to the President.

We want to know how many in the club would be interested in taking the Royal Gorge Train or the George Town Loop for a ride as a club function. Think about it as more discussion to follow.

Orian wanted to pitch the “Together” play to benefit Bessie’s Hope. Several other clubs are thinking that Saturday, August 27th at 7:30pm would be a good date to make it a Sertoma Event. The play is at the Lakewood Cultural Center Theater, 470 S. Allison Pkwy, Lakewood. (See playbill)

Joe Gomez brought up the idea of putting a 4-some together to play in the upcoming Golf For Fun event hosted by Golf 4 The Disabled on Sep 16th, a Friday at Broken Tee starting at 8am. A sign-up sheet was passed around. We have a foursome now but could have another if enough want to play.

Aug 21st is the 5th Annual John Elway golf tournament. If interested, see Bill. $125 to play.

Remember, if you bring in a new member and he stays 6 months, you get Free Dues - per new member for a quarter. A couple members just qualified for this perk.

news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:   Glenn Combellick was born in Billings, MT on May 8th, 1924. He lived, attended school and fished there until he left to join the Navy from 1946-1948 & never left the US. While there, he got into playing marbles and, at the age of 12, won the City Tournament. He also won the next year and he says those were his “athletic years”, 1936 and 1937, when he was in junior high school. Glenn played marbles in the dirt lot next to his house so much he had dirt embedded in his hand. He says he was a “good” kid and didn’t get caught doing anything bad.

Glenn graduated from high school in 1941 and was in the Navy from Dec. 3rd, 1942 until Sep. 29th, 1945. He stayed in the States the whole time, being trained. Then he came to Denver and graduated at DU in 1948, followed by passing his CPA exam and into private practice in Englewood for 27 years until he retired in 1976 at 52 years old. Married Vernie Aug 29, 1948 and has 4 kids, 8 grandkids and 2 great grandchild. He indicated his son in Alaska retired this year and will continue to live in Alaska.

Glenn has been a member of Arapahoe Sertoma since 1955 and brought into the club by the charter President. Back then there were 80 members. Thanks for being part of the club, Glenn. Listen to Glenn Combellick.mp3
