news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Dick Laskey was born 8-15-48 in Detroit Michigan. His grandfather was a dentist who worked on notables such as Race Beamer of early radio fame and baseball Hall of Famer Ty Cobb.

Dick passed around for viewing some very old currency including a $0.50 bill. His high school is closed and his rivers were the Detroit & Rusch rivers. Dick has served in a large variety of club offices including his having been President, Treasurer etc.

Dick has been married for 35 years with both a daughter and son plus two grandkids. He earned an accounting degree at Kalamazoo U.

Program:  Barney O’Grady introduced Don Burmania who currently is an agent for the Colorado Division of Gaming, the agency that regulates the casinos in the three mountain towns of Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek. They currently have 92 employees and the division answers to the Departments of law enforcement, gaming, and investigation of revenue.

Don began by answering his two most frequently asked questions: He does not know where the loosest slots are and the best way to make money is to be the house.

Don indicated that limited gambling was legalized by the state in 1990. By 1992, 75 casinos had opened. This number is now down to 40 with the smaller “Mom & Pop” types replaced by big business establishments.

Recent amendment 50 provides casino towns the right to allow casinos to expand their venues to include craps and roulette tables and to remain open 24-7. Clubs are experimenting with their hours of operation and may choose to remain open all night only on weekends.

State law dictates the house set their slot machines to pay back 80-100% of funds received. Most are set from 90-95%.

Job opportunity? Dealers earn up to $70-80K per year in tips plus a base minimum wage.

Oddly enough there is no state or federal law against card counting. This is something the house watches for and takes action against.
