Tim Pollak informed us that our Lemon Aide Stand will be in operation for this year’s Western Welcome Week Aug. 17th, a Saturday. If you can help out, let Tim know, he needs afternoon help. Not too late to sign up to help, contact Tim.

Scotts quote of the week (two of several) Signs you put on your car: I don’t think about dying, it’s the last thing I want to do: At my age, happy hour is a nap.

An opportunity to have a foursome in a golf tournament Friday, Aug 23rd was mentioned but I think it failed for lack of putting a foursome together.

Scott wants ideas as to who we might select as the next Sertoman of the Year. Many of the members have already held that title in the past.

Remember, if you bring in a new member and he stays 6 months, you get Free Dues - per new member for a quarter.

Program:  Randy Smith introduced Dr. Philip Beaver, a Pentagon 9/11 Survivor and now a Professor-in-Residence at the Daniels College of Business.

Biography at a Glance

Philip Beaver has been an adjunct professor at Daniels since 2010. Beaver served on the Joint and Army Staffs at the Pentagon as branch chief and senior analyst. He was an associate professor of applied mathematics at the U.S. Military Academy and served in the Army from 1983 to 2008.

PhD, Applied Mathematics, Naval Postgraduate School
MS, National Resourcing Strategy, Industrial College of the Armed Forces
MS, Applied Mathematics, Naval Postgraduate School
BS, Civil Engineering, United States Military Academy

Retired Army Col. Philip Beaver is still mystified that his only day of combat pay came via the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on the Pentagon.

Beaver was adjusting to life in an office building after serving nearly two decades as an infantryman and instructor at West Point. He recognizes the irony of the situation. He graduated from the prestigious academy in 1983, but because of various coincidental timing conflicts, the elite soldier missed ground action in Grenada, Panama, Iraq, Somalia and the Balkans. That day in early September, the action was brought to him.

In 2001, Beaver turned away a chance at tenure as a West Point professor and decided to try his hand as a personnel analyst for the Army. The decision almost cost him his life.

American Airlines Flight 77 was directly in line with his cubicle when it struck the west side of the Pentagon between the first and second floors around 530 mph. About 80 people were packed into the Naval Command Center just below Beaver’s office watching footage of airplanes attacking the World Trade Center.

“We’re trying to figure out what happened when all of a sudden the office was ripped by a tremendous explosion,” he said. “It’s the kind of thing you expect when you’re in combat. It’s not the kind of thing you expect when you’re in an office building.”

Every person in the Naval Command Center died within moments. An additional 42 budget analysts were in a nearby office; there were no survivors except the three employees who were out grabbing coffee.
