This weeks Reporter- Don Smith

Guests:   Alice Perkins, Renee Campbell, Barb Magee, Joe Gomez (with the Craig group & possible new member?)

Fines:  Mike Magee was fined for bringing his wife Barb on her Birthday. Jim Perkins and Rick Campbell for losing a Bronco bet and bringing their wives. Since the real SOD was not at the head table, Rick Jacobus tried to fine Bill Benton, not knowing Bill was the SOD….

Announcements:  B-days this week go to John Vierthaler.

A drawing was held for the Bronco v Houston game and you can view the board here:

Last weeks Bronco Pool winners are: Carl, Pat, Tom and Norm.

John Laudermilk has submitted an application for membership, this is his “second” plublication of said app.

Mike Magee is wondering if enough people would be interested in a trip to the Vehicle Vault: and it looks like there is so Mike will work on the details.

Last week, Doug Harder warned everyone that he has a new Membership drive going and said there will be hell to pay if we don’t participate…..(well, he didn’t exactly say it that way). His team Captains will be: Mike Magee, Phil Grimm, Scott Manley, Pat McKim, John Vierthaler & Don Smith. Team member list were passed out to the team Captains.

President Bill mentioned an open house BBQ that Step 13 is having Aug. 22nd 11am to 3pm, it’s called a “Step Fest”.

Pat has mentioned a golf gathering Aug 31st. It’s the Greg Reilly memorial Golf Gathering to raise money for Adaptive Adventures. He passed a sign-up sheet around and need one more player. The cost to player is $50 and the club picks up the balance of $500 for the tournament.

Western Welcome Week turned out great with a deposit of $900. Thanks to all that helped out. Some of the left over lemons will get donated to the food bank.

Jim Rees has more gift cards (King Soopers), get a card or use the one you have to help offset the clubs expenses. If you need a replacement, you need to get it from Jim, not Kings Soopers. Unfortunately we didn’t have enough purchases to make the quota to get a check but will carry over to the next month.

Remember, if you bring in a new member and he stays 6 months, you get Free Dues - per new member for a quarter.

news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:   Bill Benton (Mr. Tooth Pick) is a Denver native - entering the scene Sunday, October 14, 1928 during the depression, coming in at 7lbs 1 oz. He went through Mitchell Elementary, Cole Jr. High and Graduated from Manual High School, all in Denver – joined the Navy in 1946 and served for 3 years, 2 months as a photographer, and was stationed on Guam for about 21 months and returned to Denver and graduated from the University of Denver in 1954 on the GI Bill. He then went to work for Bear Frame and Axle.

Bill married Betty in 1954 (who passed away in 1995, the day after Christmas). Daughter Cindy is retired from Metro West Fire, and a son still flying the nation’s air routes with United. Bill also has a granddaughter that is 25 and a snowboarder ski bum. She moved to the mountains to be close to the slopes.

Bill has peddled cars for Burt Chevy since 1964 but the dealer is been sold so every day Bill goes to work, he looks at the sign out front. He claims to have sold over 23,000 cars and still going. He was asked if he held the title of being the longest employee at Burt but he isn’t, he is real close though. Burt is now owned by John Elway. A little history of Burt Chevrolet and the Elway deal:

Bill had a ‘significant other’ Gail, whom passed away but then found his current ‘significant other’, Ida May. Bill was brought into Sertoma by Bill Anderson, some 37 plus years ago, back in the days when we met at Wyatt’s cafeteria. He’s been a consistent and faithful doer of good deeds ever since. Program:  Scott Manley introduced Carol Huserik from Craig Hospital and their scuba diving program. But first, Scott gave Carol a check for $8,000 which was raised at the A-1 Scuba fund raiser. Along with Carol were Corky, Dave and Joe Gomez.

Craig Hospital has partnered with A-1 Scuba so people with disabilities may experience the thrill of scuba and the fact that they can move around in water and not be tied to their chair or other equipment. In some cases there will be 2 divers in the water helping the person and keeping an eye on them so that there are no problems. An example of what the volunteer helper’s do, a person that can not move their arms probably can not equalize the pressure by squeezing their nose so the helpers do that for them.

Dave is in a wheel chair and that happened when he was playing rugby in collage and had a spinal cord injury. Dave is a master scuba diver, passing all the tests to achieve that title. Dave has been able to do things in life now that he probably never thought he was going to be able to do after being paralyzed.

The best thing to do is Listen to Carol and group.mp3
