At the Board Meeting today, we asked for ideas for this year’s Christmas Party. Do we want an adult only party, a party with adults & kids? How about holding it at the Elks club? Do we want a $10 gift exchange???? What about a band or DJ, what type of music (one idea was 40’s music). We need ideas of what YOU want so write down some ideas and give them to the President.

We want to know how many in the club would be interested in taking the Royal Gorge Train or the George Town Loop for a ride as a club function. Think about it as more discussion to follow.

Orian wanted to pitch the “Together” play to benefit Bessie’s Hope. It’s this Sat. Orian will have the tickets at the “will call” window.

Joe Gomez brought up the idea of putting a 4-some together to play in the upcoming Golf For Fun event hosted by Golf 4 The Disabled on Sep 16th, a Friday at Broken Tee starting at 8am. A sign-up sheet was passed around. We have a foursome now but could have another if enough want to play.

Jim Rees brought us up to date on the King Soopers program. This 4 week period, we did terrible by only spending $3,750 but need $5,000 to get a return. The club receives 5% on any money spent at King Soopers and it doesn’t cost you anything to participate, you just need to use your special card and Jim can give you all the details on that.

Remember, if you bring in a new member and he stays 6 months, you get Free Dues - per new member for a quarter. A couple members just qualified for this perk.

news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:    The birth of Carl Duncan in 1930, like Fred Downs, ushered in the Great Depression. Carl’s parents were school teachers who maintained employment during this era in small rural schools. They met and were married in Burlington. Carl was born in 1930 in Alamosa and 2 weeks later, the family moved to Cortez, CO. and was there his first 6 years of his life. The family moved to the coal mining community of Oak Creek in 1936 where the main form of entertainment was tackle football with or without pads.

In 1940 they relocated to Avondale, a gentle farm community 15 miles east of Pueblo on the Arkansas River where the main form of entertainment was softball. Carl mentioned that per capital, Avondale is the murder capital of the U.S. with 2 murders and a population of 350. In playing softball, Carl’s first painful learning experience was to catch a fly ball with the hands rather than in the chest like a football. Duncan obtained a BA degree from the Univ. of Colorado and was drafted during the Korean War into the 101st Air Borne, was a Company Clerk and was sent to Germany because he could speak the language. He had 5 months of heavy weapon training but ended up playing the French horn in the band.

Carl recovered from the warped mentality instilled by the liberals at CU and obtained an MBA degree form DU and became a CPA, using the GI bill. In 1962 he settled in Denver and was unleashed as a CPA on an unsuspecting public. Carl was brought into the club June 2003 by Steve Bolyard. Carl was married in 1957 to ?? (He never says) they have 3 kids and 8 G-kids. Listen to Carl Duncan.mp3

Program:  Randy Smith introduced Laura Lasater, who came today to talk about Amendment 69, the ColoradoCare healthcare financing plan.

In 2015, volunteers all over the state of Colorado collected more than 150,000 signatures for a universal health care system, ColoradoCare, which made ballot this November as Amendment 69. This resident-owned, non-governmental health care financing system will be like Medicare for all Coloradans in ensuring quality comprehensive health care for everyone without deductibles for less than we pay now.

Amendment 69 will ensure quality, accessible, lifetime health care for every Colorado resident. Premiums will be collected based on income, securing health care regardless of financial circumstance. This efficient, universal system would operate in the interests of Coloradans. By eliminating layers of bureaucracy and reducing administrative and other non-medical costs, ColoradoCare would cover all residents, cost less than the current system, and eliminate deductibles and co-pays for primary and preventative care.

(I couldn’t get the presentation to work but you can learn about the plan at: )      Listen to Laura Lasater.mp3

On Sep. 15th, Freddie Gaudet will have opposing views on Amendment 69.
