Announcements:   Last week, Doug Harder warned everyone that he has a new Membership drive going and said there will be hell to pay if we don’t participate…..(well, he didn’t exactly say it that way). His team Captains will be: Mike Magee, Phil Grimm, Scott Manley, Pat McKim, John Vierthaler & Don Smith. Team members will be selected next week and the main rule is….50 & Under. (no trolling Colfax). More details next week.

Mike Magee’s brewery tour was a success.

President Bill mentioned an open house BBQ that Step 13 is having Aug. 22nd 11am to 3pm, it’s called a “Step Fest”.

New Sertoma Directories will be out shortly so a survey was taken as to who needed new ones. They do cost the club so if you don’t really need one…..

Bill mentioned a golf tournament sponsored by his company on Aug 16th. Contact Bill for more information.

Patsy, aka Pat, has mentioned a golf gathering Aug 31st. It’s the Greg Reilly memorial Golf Gathering to raise money for Adaptive Adventures. He passed a sign-up sheet around.

Western Welcome Week is Aug. 15th. Be sure to sign up and Tim did have a sign up sheet this week. 16 bodies are needed to do the work so please sign up for the “fun fest”.

Jim Rees has more gift cards (King Soopers), get a card or use the one you have to help offset the clubs expenses. If you need a replacement, you need to get it from Jim, not Kings Soopers.

Remember, if you bring in a new member and he stays 6 months, you get Free Dues - per new member for a quarter.

news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:     Jack Thompson showed up for lunch so he got hooked for the roll of SOD. Jack was born in Omaha, NE in 1944 and within 3 months, the family moved to Minnesota, growing up in S. Minneapolis. His high school is now the community center. He says the only thing he did there was being on the first varsity ski team they ever had. Skiing on those little hills they had were a joke and he had to wear a mask like you paint with to stay warm and spent more time on the lift then skiing, it just didn’t cut it and after coming to Colorado to ski several times, he later was able to transfer out here with Merrill Lynch. He enjoys it so much he skis every week.

Jack worked his way through school working at a bank and they had a Merrill Lynch office in the building so he would go and watch the stocks and buy the penny stocks and play around a little bit and ended up working for Lynch and they sent him to NY. He was a manage and was in 5 cities in 5 years and he told them he was going to Denver saying he could live here for half of what they were paying him to live in NY and after 3 months, they sent him here and Lynch was his entire career for 39 years until retiring last year. He needed something to do so he joined “us old codgers”. Jack tried to go into the Air Force right after collage but with his allergies they wouldn’t take him.

Jack has 2 children, his daughter is a teacher but enjoys going to school, working on her third degree and his son is in the Air Force and can ski circles around him. Jack again entertained us with stories of a neighbor he had, the poor guy just couldn’t do anything right and Jack was there to see it all (and sometimes to help out).

Program:  Bob Schlageter introduced Maria Hoaglund – The Last Adventure in Life.

Rev. Maria Dancing Heart Hoaglund was born in Tokyo, Japan, daughter of Lutheran missionaries. She spent her childhood growing up in Japan, attending Japanese public schools through the eighth grade. As a result, she is bilingual and bicultural, and has used her language and cultural skills in a variety of ways through the years. After finishing high school at Canadian Academy in Kobe, Japan, she moved to the United States for college. She graduated from Yale College, and later attended seminary and received her Masters of Divinity from Chicago Theological Seminary in 1984.

In 1985 she began parish ministry at Church of the Crossroads in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she was ordained in the United Church of Christ. She continued in parish ministry for ten years, serving a variety of U.C.C. churches in Hawaii and in the Great Northwest.

She changed her focus of ministry in 1995 when she began working as a bereavement coordinator for a hospice program in the Puget Sound area. She added spiritual counseling to her repertoire that same year, and has continued with this work to this day. Maria also trained in spiritual direction (1994-'97), and serves as a spiritual director and consultant. Because of her broad universal perspective, her ministry has an "inter-faith" quality. She also continues to preach and perform weddings, memorial services, funerals, and other rituals, sharing her universalist perspective. (copied from her web page below)
