Guests:  n/a

Fines:   To the President to get him oriented (he finally showed up for his first meeting as our President).

Announcements:    Did you know that Arapahoe Sertoma will be 60 years old this December?

The board discussed the idea of having the organization that will benefit from our money raising efforts, help us by selling the tickets, but we do the other work. Great idea.

President Pauwels read a Thank You letter from the United Way for our donation to help with the recent fire recovery efforts.

It’s time to get the Perfect Attendance Awards for last year passed out and I need to know who wants a certificate and/or pin. The qualified members are: Ken Kelley, Scott Manley, Dave Miley, Jim Perkins, Jim Rees and Don Smith. Also, the Board wants to know which Past Presidents don’t have a Past President Badge or lapel Pin. Please let Don know.

Sign-up sheet was passed around again for the upcoming Freedom Service Dogs tour. The tour will take place shortly after our meeting (2pm), Aug 16th and its location is at 2000 W. Union.

Phil Grimm gave the results on Tuesdays Bill Parchen Memorial Golf Tournament. The Silver Medal winners were Miley, Jacobus, Bezjak & Buckland; Gold Medal winners were Grimm, Grimm, Laskey & Manley. The Longest putt (if you can call it that) went to Jack Thompson.

Dick Enslow says our 22nd Annual tournament for Aug 28 is open to guests because he would like to have at least 20 players and he isn’t there yet. He also wants you to bring money next week; he has to have the money in after next week’s lunch.

Tim Pollak said “We will have a Lemonade Stand at Western Welcome Week this year”. Date is Aug 18 and a sign-up sheet was passed around. Tim dropped a bomb shell on the club, he says there is going to be 2 sizes of lemonade, a small and a large. There will also be Snow Cones but it hasn’t been determined if there will be 2 sizes or not… He also mentioned that at the recent Sertoma Promotion Club meeting (for which he is our representative) that next year’s Soap Box Derby will be held at the Arapahoe Fair Grounds with support from the Arapahoe Sheriff’s office. This will be a permanent location for the near future. The organizers of the Derby want each club to take on one area of responsibility so Tim has a list he is circulating. The new theme for the Soap Box Derby is “Using Gravity to Build Community”.

Jim Rees announced the results from the recent Pancake Breakfast, we netted $1,030. ALSO, IF YOU HAVE ANY MONEY FROM THE BREAKFAST TICKETS, TURN IT IN. Someone asked if next time, we can have “small” pancakes and “large” pancakes……

8 days left to vote on the Best Italian Restaurant in this year’s Denver’s 7 A-List contest. (Of course Leslie would hope her restaurant “Bacco Trattoria” is at the top of your list). Vote here:

news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:   Rick Jacobus, born 23 July, 1936 in Grand Rapids, Michigan (same hospital as President Ford but 2 years later) but grew up in Ohio on an Army base until he was a junior in high school at which point the family moved to CO. in 1953 and graduated from Sheridan High in 1954. He worked for Public Service about 3 years when a co-worker advised him to go to college. A grad of UNC, Greeley, Rick gave up teaching school (elementary phs ed) after one year but went on to a successful 35 year career in the insurance field.

Rick lives with his wife Bonnie, they were married in June of 1962. They have a son, Rod, 46, who lives in San Francisco, and a daughter Jill, 43, husband and kids live in this area, which gives Rick a chance to spoil the 2 grandkids twice a week.

Rick missed joining the Navy by one day, he was going to sign up but a letter from the Army, forwarded from Harder which stated Rick had received his 2S-deferment into the Army. That was close. He was in the NAVY Reserve and Air Force ROTC.

A member of Arapahoe since 24 July, 1974, Rick has done it all including President (79-80), Secretary, Governor, District Governor in 1982-83 and more. He mentioned how he was instrument in getting a club to shut down. He was recruited into the club by who else, Doug Harder. He did not win a Gold Coat, thanks to Harder.
Rick brought a photo of Doug, you wouldn't believe what he used to look like.

Rick deviated from the normal routine of talking about himself and instead, talked about his dad’s carrier as a prison guard, it was very interesting. Listen to Rick Jacobus.mp3 He passed around a brief history of Alcatraz and you can see it here: http://www.bop.gov/about/history/alcatraz.jsp

Program:   The program didn’t show up but Peter gave us a brief outline of what he has been doing the last 8 weeks, floating around on many different rivers and hosting many handicapped folks. It turns out that our Rev. Robinson caught the largest fish.

We will have to get Peter to be the “Program” in a couple weeks to tell us more about it and show some of the photos he took.
