THIS WEEK IN REVIEW ....December 15, 2016
This weeks Reporter- Don Smith

news_l3.gif  Bob Stein          Joe Gomez    news_l5.gif  Rev. Robinson

Guests:    Alice Perkins, Jim’s wife: Vicky Oren, Jim Robinson’s LSC: Mike Ballew….Who….Mike Ballew, you know him, he shows up 3 times a year. Great to see you again Mike. Don’t forget to let me know when you can be the SOD, we want your $5…..

FINES:   Joe Gomez fined for having his name badge in the Pot of Gold to many times.

Birthdays:   Mary Hiss, Dean’s wife.  (That is why Dean missed the meeting today).

Announcements: It was reported that Ed Bezjak is doing better after his fall on an escalator in Nevada. He is at Spaulding Rehab Hospital in Aurora. Everyone is welcome to visit him but call first: 303 367-1166 Rick gave details on how banged up Ed was but his therapist said for an 80 year old, he is on track for recovery. I guess he has so many friends it’s hard to get on his visitor’s schedule. Bob Stein said it may be about 4 weeks before Ed gets to go home.

Gary Athey is at it again, this time organizing our box that contains the name slips and other goodies….As reported by Joe Gomez.

Norm saw Will Martinez recently and reported that Will is doing pretty well.

Doug reported the death of an old time member, Taylor Baird. He was a member in the 70’s. No funeral information yet.

Bob gave us an update on the Honor Flight program. They had a fund raising event and raised enough money to be able to send more WWII vets to Washington DC next year.

At the Board Meeting, it was talked about that we need some ideas for raising funds. We need any and all…..even returning to Bingo was brought up….ugh. Our funds are running low and no events are on the horizon.

One idea is when you buy something from Amazon, goto www.smile.amazon.com depending on if your page automatically signs you in or not to Amazon, there will be a box to enter an organization name. Enter Arapahoe Sertoma -- You have to go to www.smile.amazon.com for this to work. The club will receive .5% back.

Broncos v New England.jpg Last week’s winners were: Benton x3 & Buckland. Bill gave Buckland a $1,000 check, the clubs portion of the pool so far.

Rick Jacobus is busy with the Freedom Week essay’s and needs volunteers to help read and rate them. He got a couple willing souls today but could us more help. If you want to be part of this, let Rick know.

There is plenty of room for more folks to come to the Christmas/Holiday Party. Orian report we have about 50 signed up and we were looking at 80-100 folks. You can bring family, friends….anyone you would like. ALSO: If you bring a prospective member, that person gets in free.

The Christmas/Holiday party at the Elks club and the date is Tuesday, Dec. 20th. For now it looks like it will start at 5:30 PM cocktails & 6:30 PM dinner followed by a DJ playing all your favorites and dancing. There will be a gathering of toys (un-wrapped) to be donated to Tennyson Center for Children (age group of about 8 to 12 years old). Toy value something like $10 to $15 and we hope to have more information soon on all the plans. Dinner for now looks like Chicken or Beef and maybe a Vegie plate, all served by the Ladies of the Elks Club. Cost looks like $20 per person. All Friends, Family and Relatives are invited; we would like to see maybe 80 to 100 in attendance. The theme of this year’s party is……FUN.

There will NOT be a regular lunch meeting that week, Dec. 22nd.

Remember, if you bring in a new member and he stays 6 months, you get Free Dues - per new member for a quarter. A couple members just qualified for this perk.

news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:  Scott Manley was born 1947 in Denver at St. Joseph Hospital. Went to Park Hill elementary and then to East High. He attended UNC in Greeley and eventually earned a Master degree. He got a teaching degree and started teaching in Greeley, then went on to get a Masters, later getting a doctorate at UNC in administration and counseling.

Scott shared a couple things about his family, one was that his father boxed. So one day his father gave him a lesson on “why you don’t pick a fight with your dad”….

Scott worked at Craig Hospital for 36 years and met his wife, Cathy, there. They have two children, a son and a daughter and two grandkids now. Scott and Cathy are both retired. His son is carrying on the Manley tradition by working at Craig and his daughter is a nurse at Rose. Scott works with wood and tinkers with old cars. No military service, his draft number was 328 but he also had bad legs. The river was the Platte River. Dean Hiss brought him into the club. Scott used to work with Sertoma at Craig. Sertoma bought Craig the first van in the 1970’s.

Program:  Doug Harder introduced Annie Juergens who is a Nurse and works for Alternative Choice Home Care Nursing. Doug happened to think of Annie as the Program because she helps Doug’s nephew, a disabled Vet, who needs home nursing care.

Annie gave a good run down on the services that home health care givers can provide, anything from bathing to making sure you take your meds to help with daily therapy. She said that Medicare pays a lot of the expenses and also Vets in many cases have no co-pays.

I couldn’t find a specific web page for her company but there are many web sites that lists her company and how to get ahold of them.  Listen to Annie Juergens.mp3 to hear the whole story about what they can do for you.
