Rick Jacobus is busy with the Freedom Week essay’s and needs volunteers to help read and rate them. He got a couple willing souls today but could us more help. If you want to be part of this, let Rick know.

Glenn Combellick has resigned from being the Chairman of the Arapahoe Sertoma Foundation and turned the role over to Tim Pollak. Glenn will still be part of the Foundation committee. Glenn has been part of the Foundation for many many years and the club thanked him for his service and time.

Don Smith showed off the new projector the club has bought. It has some nifty features, like being able to display a slideshow without a computer and also, when there is no media attached, it will display the club logo. It also has its own audio amp and speakers but that part hasn’t been tested yet in the Elk’s hall. Joe Dowdey was kind enough to donate an Apple adaptor so now you can use either a PC or Apple computer using either a HDMI or VGA cable.

Orian updated us on the upcoming Christmas/Holiday party at the Elks club and the date is Tuesday, Dec. 20th. For now it looks like it will start at 5:30 PM cocktails & 6:30 PM dinner followed by a DJ playing all your favorites and dancing. There will be a gathering of toys (un-wrapped) to be donated to Tennyson Center for Children (age group of about 8 to 12 years old). Toy value something like $10 to $15 and we hope to have more information soon on all the plans. Dinner for now looks like Chicken or Beef and maybe a Vegie plate, all served by the Ladies of the Elks Club. Cost looks like $20 per person. All Friends, Family and Relatives are invited; we would like to see maybe 80 to 100 in attendance. The theme of this year’s party is……FUN.

There will NOT be a regular lunch meeting that week, Dec. 22nd.

Remember, if you bring in a new member and he stays 6 months, you get Free Dues - per new member for a quarter. A couple members just qualified for this perk.

news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:  John Laudermilk’s family is from Germany and a lot of milk producers used to water down the milk to make more profit and Laudermilk means “good milk”. Born in August 19, 1941, just before WW-II and a couple of his favorite TV channels are the Science and History channels and his single favorite TV show is Big Bang Theory.

John started to join the Army but then decided to go into the Air Force since he loved airplanes and machinery. On the day John left, it was storming so his dad gave him a $20 bill for cab fair to the train station to go to Baltimore. One of his dad’s pieces of advice was to “listen and keep your mouth shut”

John was in The 8th Air Force Hundredth Bomb Wing which consisted of B-17 bombers and recently he saw a TV show about the Wing called The Bloody Hundredth. (John gave some more info on this, listen to his audio). He liked the Air Force but decided if he had to do it over gain, he would join the Navy because they had better food.

John worked for AT&T for years.
John’s nick-name is Goat Head…..when playing golf, his golf partners (Doug and Ed) kept telling him to “Go Ahead” but John thought they were saying Goat Head.

John is married and has two boys. Doug and Ed brought him into the club in 2015. John claimed to “not be a joiner” but he came and really enjoyed the club so he joined.

Program:  Doug Harder introduced Marta Welch, who was born in Cuba in 1952 and sent to the US in 1960 under Operation Peter Pan. Marta attends the same church as Doug and Rev. Robinson (sorry about the Marta). Marta talked about her early childhood in Cuba and how it came about that she was sent to the US after Fidel Castro came to power.

Operation Peter Pan (Operation Pedro Pan or Operación Pedro Pan) was a mass exodus of over 14,000 unaccompanied Cuban minors to the United States between 1960 and 1962. Father Bryan O. Walsh of the Catholic Welfare Bureau created the program to provide air transportation to the United States for Cuban children. It operated without publicity out of fear that it would be viewed as an anti-Castro political enterprise.

Between 26 December 1960 and 23 October 1962, many Cuban youths traveled to Miami without their parents. Until early 1962, the children were required to have a visa and twenty-five dollars for airfare into the United States. Many family members already in the United States applied for visas and sent the necessary funds to relatives in Cuba. The U.S. Embassy in Havana issued the necessary student visas. On 3 January 1962, the U.S. Department of State announced that Cuban minors no longer needed visas to immigrate to the United States. Many Cubans believed that Castro's time in power would be short-lived. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Peter_Pan
