Announcements:  It was reported that Ed Bezjak is doing better after his fall on an escalator in Nevada. He will be coming back to Colorado Friday, the 9th and will be at Spaulding Rehab Hospital in Aurora. Everyone is welcome to visit him but call first: 303 367-1166 Rick gave details on how banged up Ed was but his therapist said for an 80 year old, he is on track for recovery.

Doug called to report the death of an old time member, Taylor Baird. He was a member in the 70’s.

At the Board Meeting, it was talked about that we need some ideas for raising funds. We need any and all…..even returning to Bingo was brought up….ugh. Our funds are running low and no events are on the horizon.

One idea is when you buy something from Amazon, goto www.smile.amazon.com depending on if your page automatically signs you in or not to Amazon, there will be a box to enter an organization name. Enter Arapahoe Sertoma -- You have to go to www.smile.amazon.com for this to work. The club will receive .5% back.

The Club received $243 from the King Soopers program. If you need a card, see Dick Mason.

Broncos v Tennessee.jpg Last week’s winners were: Miley, Benton & Randy Smith.

Rick Jacobus is busy with the Freedom Week essay’s and needs volunteers to help read and rate them. He got a couple willing souls today but could us more help. If you want to be part of this, let Rick know.

There is plenty of room for more folks to come to the Christmas/Holiday Party. Orian report we have about 50 signed up and we were looking at 80-100 folks. You can bring family, friends….anyone you would like. ALSO: If you bring a prospective member, that person gets in free. . Bring your money next week

The Christmas/Holiday party at the Elks club and the date is Tuesday, Dec. 20th. For now it looks like it will start at 5:30 PM cocktails & 6:30 PM dinner followed by a DJ playing all your favorites and dancing. There will be a gathering of toys (un-wrapped) to be donated to Tennyson Center for Children (age group of about 8 to 12 years old). Toy value something like $10 to $15 and we hope to have more information soon on all the plans. Dinner for now looks like Chicken or Beef and maybe a Vegie plate, all served by the Ladies of the Elks Club. Cost looks like $20 per person. All Friends, Family and Relatives are invited; we would like to see maybe 80 to 100 in attendance. The theme of this year’s party is……FUN.

There will NOT be a regular lunch meeting that week, Dec. 22nd.

Remember, if you bring in a new member and he stays 6 months, you get Free Dues - per new member for a quarter. A couple members just qualified for this perk.

news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:  Mike Magee took a very low key, enjoyable approach to the task at hand by giving a simple review of all the life events he has shared with the club on many occasion.

Mike completed his education at the University of Colorado. 1989 was a big year for Mike as he began two major commitments. He married Barbara and joined Arapahoe Sertoma. He feels both were good choices. No military. Mike was brought into the club by Mabe Downey – no indication that Mabe also brought Mike to Barbara.

Mike Magee was born 1939 in Houston but grew up in Chicago starting at about age 2. He can remember looking out his window and seeing the Troop Trains. He went to school in the Chicago area, then came out to C.U. in 1957, got a degree in marketing, then went back to Chicago and sold shoes for 9 years with the Florshiem Shoe Co. He liked Denver so well he came back and tried selling shoes here. He got tired of the flying and driving back and forth with the shoe business so he got into real estate back in 1972, then later with his wife, Barb.

Mike reviewed is early work experiences involving Selling flower seeds, setting bowling pins, and washing cars as a youngster, In College he sold clothes in various stores while attending night school at Cu. He currently has a Handyman Business. Listen to Mike Magee.mp3

Program:  Doug Harder introduced Kala Slater from Arapahoe Co. Department of Human Services, Collaborative Foster Care Program of Arapahoe, Douglas & Jefferson Counties. Kala came to tell us about the Foster Care Program.

Mission Statement:

When a child needs protection and is unable to remain at home, foster parents provide a temporary environment that honors true childhood. Foster parents embrace children, value their family connections, and provide a home free of abuse and neglect until they can return home, be adopted, or live independently.

The Collaborative Foster Care Program is committed to assuring foster parents have adequate training, support, and resources to promote the child’s best interest.

The Collaborative Foster Care Program was created in August 2008 as a joint venture between Arapahoe and Jefferson Counties, with a goal to combine the best practice from both counties and improve placement outcomes for children in care. In July 2012, Douglas County joined the collaborative program.

Headquartered in Arapahoe County, the program is housed in Littleton, Colorado where supervisors and staff from all three counties recruit, train, certify and support foster families throughout the Denver-metro area. http://jeffco.us/collaborative-foster-care/about-us/
