Guests are welcome but will cost extra, price might be $22 but not sure. Registration about 10:45am.

If you plan on bringing a guest or two Feb. 7th for the program, let us know so more meals can be provided, we don’t want to come up short.

Peter is suggesting we play musical chairs each week so to get things started, Jacobus and Mason swapped seats.

Remember, if you bring in a new member and he stays 6 months, you get Free Dues - per new member for a quarter.

news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:   Bill Benton (Mr. Tooth Pick), is a Denver native - entering the scene Sunday, October 14, 1928 during the depression, coming in at 7lbs 1 oz. He went through Mitchell Elementary, Cole Jr. High and Graduated from Manual High School, all in Denver – joined the Navy in 1946 and served for 3 years, 2 months as a photographer, and was stationed on Guam for about 21 months and returned to Denver and graduated from the University of Denver in 1954 on the GI Bill. He then went to work for Bear Frame and Axle.

Bill married Betty in 1954 (who passed away in 1995, the day after Christmas). Daughter Cindy is retired from Metro West Fire, and a son still flying the nation’s air routes with United. Bill also has a granddaughter that is 25 and a snowboarder ski bum. She moved to the mountains to be close to the slopes.

Bill has peddled cars for Burt Chevy since 1964 but the dealer is been sold so every day Bill goes to work, he looks at the sign out front. He claims to have sold over 23,000 cars and still going. He was asked if he held the title of being the longest employee at Burt but he isn’t, he is real close though. Burt is now owned by John Elway. A little history of Burt Chevrolet and the Elway deal:

Bill had a ‘significant other’ Gail, whom just passed away April 9th. Bill was brought into Sertoma by Bill Anderson, some 37 plus years ago, back in the days when we met at Wyatt’s cafeteria. He’s been a consistent and faithful doer of good deeds ever since. Listen to BillBenton.mp3

Program:   Peter Pauwels introduced Cindy Markham who filled in for Linda Holloway as the program today and came to talk about Sertoma club membership and promotion, awards etc. Cindy is from the new Southglenn club and is the Lt. Governor in charge of Growth, Membership, Incentives and Awards.

Sertoma is the 3rd oldest service group in the world and about the least known. The Southglenn club was conceived during discussions on the golf course with Mike Camelio and chartered on Jan. 1st, 2012 with their Charter Banquet held Feb. 15th, 2012.

Here is a link to their page: They meet at the Southglenn Country Club, 1489 E Easter Ave, Centennial CO 80122 on the First Wednesday of each month for lunch from Noon until 1:00 pm and on the Third Wednesday of each month for dinner from 5:30 pm until 7:00 pm.

Cindy has a daughter attending the School of Mines and suggested to her daughter to see about getting other students to form a Sertoma club at the School. One of the benefits would be having service work / volunteer work on their resume.

At the Fall District Conference, Linda talked about a contest that if you bring in the most new members by June 1st, you win 3 days/2 nights at a condo of your choice out of 25 different locations. Linda owns a condo and is donating the use of it / or the one of your choice on the list of time shares. There is no cost to the winner.

Linda also had talked about what the Chatfield club did which was have a rush party in which several new members came on board out a just several guests.

Cindy brought up awards and want us to think about awards as a Thank You for the job we do. Two awards she brought up are the Service to Mankind and the Sertoman of the Year (several of our members have won those awards). The deadline for submitting recommendations for these awards is July 1st. Guidelines on awards and reports can be found here:        Listen to CindyMarkham.mp3
