news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:     Jim Helmick had the honors once again. Jim was born in Toledo Ohio on August 11, 1936, on the banks of the Maumee River. At the age of 19 he enrolled into the University of Toledo and 10 years later received his degree in Electrical Engineering. In the meantime, he got married and fathered 3 children who have produced so far 7 grandchildren. While in night school, he worked at a large hardware store from 54-60, and at Toledo Scale from 60-64. His work caused him to travel a lot, going to Texas, Alabama, Nebraska, Iowa, New Jersey, California and Colorado. Jim was born between wars and although he did register for the draft, he was not called.

He started working for Johns Mansville in 1965, George Hannes hired him in Ohio. In 1974 he had to choose between staying married or moving to Colorado. Since his wife wished to stay in Toledo with the kids and grand kids, and since it is obvious that Jim is here in Colorado, the choice is clear. Jim later remarried and is now married to Barbara, his wife of 37 years and he has 2 daughters and a son plus about 7 grandkids and one great grandchild.

Jim held various positions with J.M. including director of fiber glass research and director of marketing. After spending sometime in California in the minerals division, Jim left J.M. in 1990 and returned to Colorado in 1998. Rich Carlson brought him into the club in 1998. Listen to Jim Helmick.mp3

Program:   John Vierthaler introduced Chris Forsyth who founded The Judicial Accountability project.

The Judicial Integrity Project is a non-partisan non-profit focused on judicial reform. We pursue procedural and informational measures with the goal of increasing the public's confidence in the judicial system and ensuring justice for all.

A fair and impartial justice system is an indispensable element our society. Yet too often, all of our attention is focused on political candidates for offices in the legislative and executive branches. And the result is that our justice system suffers due to a lack of attention. Meanwhile, we go to the voting booth without knowing much, if anything, about the judges who are up for retention.

That's why we formed The Judicial Integrity Project -- we need to focus some attention on the judicial branch. From the discipline commissions to the performance commissions to the nominating commissions, we can make tweaks that will improve the justice system.

The Honest Judge Amendment would remove conflicts of interest in the system.

What happens when four judges are on the judicial discipline commission, judges make the rules regarding judicial discipline, and the director of the discipline commission reports to judges? Absolutely nothing. And that's the problem. The dismissal rate of complaints against judges in Colorado hit 97% in 1993 and has averaged 97% ever since.

The Honest Judge Amendment would transfer the power to discipline judges to the Independent Ethics Commission, which already exists and disciplines members of the executive and legislative branches. Ensuring the Code of Judicial Conduct is actually enforced is essential for increasing public confidence in the judiciary. The Honest Judge Amendment is a top priority for us. But we need your help to get it on the ballot.

You can print out a petition and get up to 24 signatures to help get this on the ballot. A link is on their page. View Chris’s presentation here: Judicial Integrity
