Guests:  Bill Smyth from Southglenn club came to get caught up on attending meetings to go towards his “Perfect Attendance”. After being fined a couple times, we may have scared him from attending our meetings again. Rev. Robinson came in late and didn’t introduce Bryn Boyer.

Will Martinez was an Honored guest today, we haven’t seen him in months.

Fines:   Where do I start? I think almost everyone was fined for one thing or another from cell phones going off, not standing when addressing the Chair, Scott for not calling for “Guests”, showing up late (in one case, it was determined the the member was not late but the President started the meeting early so the Pres. Paid). Lets not forget the fine for anyone not having Orange and Blue on and in some cases, it was a stretch the way some members passed the test.

Announcements    Orian Hunter almost made it today, maybe next week. Joe Dowdey almost made it also, he still has things going on at home and work that takes up all his time.
Don Nelson is doing better with his back problems but may not be back for several more weeks. Give Don a call at home, he would like to hear from us.

We get a chance to try again for the Super Bowl Pot. I would wish everyone “Good Luck” but I would rather win it myself.

Rick Jacobus didn’t pass around the sign-up sheet for Freedom Week but if you have any questions, contact Rick. Arrive a little early to register and lunch is served at 11:30am. Event this year is at Pinehurst C.C. 6255 W. Quincy Ave., Denver.

Scott has us going to Wind Crest Living Communities for lunch on February 20th. He says wives would be welcome also so contact Scott if you want to take your bride.

Scott had some info on the charity golf event with S.W. for this year. We may be able to help by getting sponsorship and we would get a porrtion of the Net income.
He also gave a little info on the upcoming Celebrate Sound Walk which is Saturday, May 17th and Ken has agreed to be the Chair of the Sponsorship Commettee with Scott and Tim’s assistance.

Remember, if you bring in a new member and he stays 6 months, you get Free Dues - per new member for a quarter.

news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:  Dick Enslow was born Jan 23, 1942 in Aurora, Ill., near the Fox River. He went to school in the Aurora area and received a BS in Industrial Engineering. He went to work for Allis Chalmers. He came to Denver in 1973 for a job offer and was amazed at the weather so he moved here. He went to work for Materials Handling, then went into the reverse mortgage business several years ago but after being told they were going to train him at his expense, he retired.

Dick Enslow 2014.jpg

Dick has been married to Carol for 48 years. She did high school teaching, and then computer sales then went to work for a travel company that got bought out by Delta. They had great benefits. She last did student information systems for the Jeffco school district until she retired in April a couple years ago.

Dick has two kids. His daughter, Kedra, who has given Dick his first grandchild. Son Brad is a couple years younger then his sister and was married recently. He plays two man sand volleyball “professionally” (about $100 a year).

Dick was drafted when he was 21 but since he had dislocated his shoulder in high school several times he was rejected at the physical and they never contacted him since.

Dick has a gift from a college fraternity brother in a hunting accident. A Pheasant flew up between the 2 of them and Dick got most of the shot which is still there. The shot is lead so it doesn't get picked up by the airport x-ray machines but his 2 knee replacements do.

Dick is going to be our Sponsorship/Finance Chairman again for the new fiscal year. He was brought into the club by the honorable Bill Parchen and was President with a gold coat and gone through most chairs. Dick is one of the more active members, always stepping up to work behind the scene on many fund raising evernts, such as the golf tournaments and in the past, Bingo.

Program:   Randy Smith introduced Mark Serrezes from the Nat. Snow & Ice Data Center at CU Boulder.

Mark Serrezes.jpg

Mark Serreze is the director of NSIDC. In 2009, he succeeded Dr. Roger Barry, who retired from the post in 2008 after 31 years of service. Serreze, a senior research scientist at NSIDC since 2005, is also a full professor in the University of Colorado at Boulder Geography Department, and a Fellow of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES). He studies Arctic climate, and the causes and global implications of climate change in the Arctic. Serreze is well known for his research on the declining sea ice cover in the Arctic Ocean.

For more on Mark Serreze and his research, as well as other NSIDC researchers, please see

Mark had a power point presentation and a lot of information about the amount of ice in the Artic and what the future holds for more or less ice. Mark wasn’t here to preach doom and gloom but gave a very informative analysis of what is happening to the ice and what it might mean in the future.

The best thing to do is to Listen to Mark Serrezes.mp3 and view the presentation saved here as Artic ice.pdf file.
