In Sacramento he flew RC-121 radar planes.

He left the service in July 1960 and went to work for Underwood-Olivetti and in 1962 moved to Denver for 6 months then to Colorado Springs as branch manager. They closed that office and he moved back to Denver to work for Xerox, then was transferred to Houston as a manager. During which time McClellan AFB in Sacramento was closed to major flying operations. He moved back to Denver in June of 1969 and got into real estate with a couple of former Xerox friends, then went out on his own and has been since 1975.

Mel Tewahade has a fascinating history with a complete focus on assisting Ethiopia and its people after a very dark period of communist rule between 1974 and 1991.

Mel Tewahade's father, Tewahade Woldeyes, was the then-governor of Harar, the region where the college was located.
