Guests:   Alice Perkins, Jim’s wife; Vicky Oren, Rev. Robinson’s LSC; Simpson St Fort (prospective new member).

FINES:   Cell phone violation…

Birthdays:  Rick Campbell & Rick Jacobus

Announcements:  The new President started off commenting on the food again but it wasn’t chicken so he gave that idea up.

Pat is hoping someone will attend the Aug. 12th Central and Front Range District Leadership Conference and Awards Luncheon at 8:30am. Let Pat know if you can go.

Scott Manley and Jim Rees put their collective heads together and came up with the idea of having Local Awards since we failed to get them submitted to International. Their idea was to nominate Bill Benton for our Sertoman of the Year and it was unanimously passed by the members. A big Thank You to Bill Benton for all he has and is doing for the club.

Before Gary introduced the program, he mentioned a couple items. One was to thank Doug Harder for having Robert Rhodes from the VA be a program a few months back. Robert helped Gary get some badly needed VA benefits. (Robert has his own medical problems and is no longer with the VA-Legion). Also thanking Doug for inviting Simpson who is going to join. Simpson has already volunteered to help with an event the club had cleaning out a house.

Gary also mentioned that we are partnering with Jill Wayne and Randy Smith to collect and distribute donated hearing aids. More on this later.

Gary also commented on one of the caterer’s sons for his helping out during lunch. A collection was taken and given to Sabastian and later he went to the board meeting to thank the guys that donated. Classy act on his part and the guys appreciated that. (good up-bringing).

Bill Benton is collecting money for the shirts so if you ordered, get him your money so he can get the order in. He has an order sheet he will pass around. You have your choice of a long sleeve button shirt ($32.98) or a short sleeve golf shirt Micro-Mesh ($29.98). You also have a color option but we think it would be nice if everyone had the same color (Bill had blue and Don is going with blue unless everyone else wants a different color).

Bill informed us that John Elway is hosting the Englewood Chamber Tuesday the 25th, from 4-7pm, an event like what we will be doing in September. All club members are welcome to attend. It may be a great way to get ideas on what we want to do.

Tim Pollak passed the envelope around again this week for the tickets his wife is selling for her sorority, Beta Sigma Phi. It’s a fundraiser, Pizza at The Garlic Knot, 1620 Canal Circle, Littleton, 80120 on Aug. 17th from 5-8pm. $10 per person, all the Pizza you can eat, plus garlic knots.

news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:   The ever entertaining Doug Harder enlightened us again today as to his background and achievements. Robert Douglas Harder (alias Doug) fittingly was born on a Labor Day, Sept 22, 1937, in an oil camp in Houston, Texas near the Rio Grande River. He didn’t stay there long enough to get tall. Doug attended grade schools in Louisiana and Missouri and the 5th through 11th grade (minus one year) in Casper, Wyoming. While in the fourth grade, he had Scarlet Fever. He finished high school in Englewood. He attended 21 schools in 20 years (slow learner?).

Doug was in the Army National Guard from 1959 to 1966 and said his squad did a fabulous job of keeping the Commies out of GA. After that, he attended CU and UNC and retired as a Mortgage Broker. He has been a member of Pastor Robinson’s church, Christ Lutheran, for over 49 years and an Elder for 409 years. Shortly after the Katrina disaster, he and Pastor Robinson went down there with a disaster relief team. He said you never want to see such destruction.

Doug has been married to Carolyn since 1963 and they have 4 children and 10 grandkids and 2 great grandkids. Their oldest son Zach, was a member for a short time. Doug’s son-in-law Joel White has been our program several times.

Doug was brought into the club by Bill Parchen in 1966 and has been president twice and has a Gold coat. He has been on the Foundation Committee and brought in about 58 members to Sertoma. (way to go Doug). Listen to Doug Harder.mp3

Program:  Fill-in Program Dir. Gary Athey introduced Jill Wayne from Marion Downs Center, Hearing-Speech-Language. Jill is now the Executive Director after The Center for Hearing-Speech-Language merged with The Marion Downs Center over 3 years ago. She came today to tell us more but also to accept a donation from the club.

Jill Wayne, as always, had a lot to say about hearing, speech and language and how it affects not only the person with poor hearing but those around them. Listen to Jill Wayne.mp3 and view this hand-out she had.
