SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:     usaf.gif

George Hannes enlightened us today with his Bio. George was born Easter Sunday morning, April 4th, 1926 in Toledo, Ohio, on the banks of the Maumee. Maumee means Mother Water by Miami Indians. His grade school and high schools are still standing. To earn money as a young lad, George sold the Toledo Blade and News Bee on the corner of Collingwood & Delaware. For extra money, he would sell numbers. He attended Toledo and Emory Colleges but it took him over 14 years to get a college degree due to all the moving around the world he did.

In 1943, he joined the Army Air Force 1943–1946 and was a Tail Gunner and compared to Don Nelson, I had a walk-in-the-park. If you’re under 50, you probably didn’t know there was an Army Air Force. In 1945, George got frozen on Project Cross Roads, the Atom bomb tests on Bikini Atoll. He moved around so much that the laundry couldn’t keep up with him so he was always wearing new, stiff green sorts. A year after being discharged, George married Jean Collins (1947), and they have been together 66 years this Aug. They have 3 children, Dave, Linda & Cindy, 3 grandchildren and 4 great grandkids.

He started out working for LOF (Libby Owen Ford) in 1950, transferred to W By Gawd, VA in 1952 to the first LOF fiber glass plant. Mergers & sub mergers, his company became part of John Manville, spending 32 years there as Eng. Etc VP research, finished JM career building plants overseas. He served on 3 outside corp. boards while with JM and worked in England, France, Japan, Finland, Germany, Italy and the Soviet Union. George retired from JM in 1982 and had his own consulting business until 1988 ala Social Security and no more travel!!

George was invited to Sertoma by Bill Parchen and Dick Sorensen, 2 of the best.

Some info George wanted to pass on: Joe Geers was the only man I knew at JM that could answer any question on the use of pipe. He worked with Dick Sorensen
Jim Helmick helped the U.S. get to Space by working on the R&D and production of the fiber for the tiles on the Space Shuttles. Wally Schirra, who I shared an office with for a while, told me the tile would never have fallen off if the nuts putting it on would have stopped spitting in the adhesive.     Listen to GeorgeHannes.mp3

Program:  Randy Smith introduced Matt Robbins from the Colorado Lottery. Matt gave a very informative overview of the Lottery with a PowerPoint presentation.

Since 1983: The Colorado Lottery is proud to be serving Coloradans for over 27 years. When we started doing business in 1983, we offered a single Scratch game. Today we offer a variety of Scratch games as well as our Jackpot games: Powerball, Mega Millions, Lotto, MatchPlay and Cash 5.

We offer great games: We are constantly striving to create new and exciting games for players that offer great prizes. Our Cash 5 game offers a $20,000 top prize and our new $2 MatchPlay game has a minimum payout of $100,000! Players can win anywhere from $1 to a cool $1,000,000 playing Scratch games that come in a variety of play styles with price points starting at $1 up to $20. Our Jackpot drawing games: Powerball, Mega Millions and Lotto, offer multi-million dollar prizes that could change lives! In fiscal year 2010, prizes paid to Lottery winners totaled $310.4 million, bringing total prizes paid since the Lottery’s inception to over $4.9 billion! We love winners and are constantly developing new ideas and promotions to keep play alive.           Listen to Matt Robbins.mp3
