This weeks Reporter-Don Smith

Quote:  Series between George Bernard Shaw & Winston Churchill: Shaw to press “ I was standing in front of the Parliament the other day when an empty car drove up and Churchill stepped out”. Show to Churchill: “I am holding two lodge seat tickets for you to attend the opening night performance of my new play Pygmalion, bring a friend if you have one”. Churchill to Shaw “Unable to attend opening night of your new play. Will attend second night if you have one”.

Guests:   McKim introduced is nephew Matt Nole who will soon be one of Americas finest, a Marine: Norm introduced Jim Britton for the last time, he is now a member. Ken introduced Mike Ludlam.

Fines:   It was a great Fine Day at Sertoma; fine to Tim for having on Don Nelson’s badge, Table one for sitting at their table before the bell rang, McKim for family cruelty for bringing his nephew, George for not having his badge on –FAIL, it was in his hand, to Miley for a frivolous fine, to Harder for poor induction training to the new presidents, new member fine to Jim Britton and to the Pres. for breaking from tradition (he forgot to welcome the group).

Announcements:   Jim Britton was finally inducted today and trying to get any personal information out of him is going to be like pulling teeth. We may have to get Tommy Tooth to do his thing on Jim. I did hear Jim say he has lived in Denver area all his life and was born in Englewood, attended North High, has 1 son and 2 grandkids. Other then that, we will have to what until he is the SOD. President Perkins, try as he might, just didn’t have the proper training for the job, that’s why Doug got fined.

Orian claims he is going to attend the upcoming board meeting so he can keep his “perfect attendance” going.

The District Social is Aug. 19th.

Jim Rees mentioned the Western Welcome Week is Aug. 21st.

Dick Enslow announced the Annual Arapahoe Sertoma Fall classic Golf Tournament is only five and a half weeks away, Sep 7th. Sign up sheet soon.

Will Martinez has King Soopers coupons. The club receives 5% but only 4 people regularly use the service. The card is like a debit card so it’s easy to use.

Jim Helmick was startled to learn he would be the SOD today. Jim was born in Toledo Ohio on August 11, 1936, on the banks of the Maumee River. At the age of 19 he enrolled into the University of Toledo and 10 years later received his degree in Electrical Engineering. In the meantime, he got married and fathered 3 children who have produced so far 7 grandchildren. While in night school, he worked at a large hardware store from 54-60, and at Toledo Scale from 60-64. His work caused him to travel a lot, going to Texas, Alabama, Nebraska, Iowa, New Jersey, California and Colorado. Jim was born between wars and although he did register for the draft, he was not called.

He started working for Johns Mansville in 1965, George Hannes hired him in Ohio. In 1974 he had to choose between staying married or moving to Colorado. Since his wife wished to stay in Toledo with the kids and grand kids, and since it is obvious that Jim is here in Colorado, the choice is clear. Jim later remarried and is now married to Barbara, his wife of 35 years and he has 2 daughters and a son plus about 7 grandkids. Jim held various positions with J.M. including director of fiber glass research and director of marketing. After spending sometime in California in the minerals division, Jim left J.M. in 1990 and returned to Colorado in 1998. Rich Carlson brought him into the club in 1998.

Program:  Rick Jacobus introduced Todd Welter, president and founder of R.T. Welter & Associates, Inc. Todd is affiliate faculty at Regis University. For more than ten years he has been teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses in managed care and finance. Todd has also just recently been named to the faculty of the University of Denver’s University College in Healthcare Management. Managed care contracting, physician employment arrangements, coding and practice finance are Todd’s specific expertise.

Todd returned today to give us an update on the way Healthcare is going.

Todd Welter.jpg

The trouble all physicians are going through which effects us are more patients, less time with them and they do less even if the patient requires more services.

The primary care Dr. will be extinct if we don’t fix the healthcare bill as hospitals are buying up medical practices and the Dr. will work for the hospital, paying them on how much they work, not on quality. Efficiency of care profile discourage Dr's from using their pen, requesting more test or writing prescriptions.

Health ins. Companies are consolidating, they want more patients but they don’t have any more Dr's. so they have more control over Dr's. With the healthcare reform, we may be insuring more patients but the government is inserting itself into our lives.

Medicare cost money, lots of it. It was originally designed to be a fairly limited benefit but we keep adding more benefits which cost more money. Congress doesn't do anything about fixing it but they rescue it and that means they pay the hospitals and Dr's the same amount of money but the costs are going up. This means the Dr's will stop taking more Medicare patients, especially if the 21% decrease goes into effect.

The new crops of Dr’s are in high school or collage now and they aren’t going to medical school. Dr's need to be paid well or they won’t do the job. The next 10 years will be very diff then in the last 50 years. We are going to EMR (electronic medical records). Medicare is forcing Dr's to go to EMR, they are paying the Dr's to switch. In about 5 years if the Dr. has not converted his records, Medicare is going to withhold money from them. To keep cost under control, they are going to hmo's. The largest ppo is Medicare. One way health insurance limits access is by the co pay. The hmo uses a gate keeper which is the Dr., the Dr. decides if you go to a specialist, not you. (303) 534-0388
