Guests:    Lori Bailey is Jim Robinson’s Life Skills Trainer, filling in for Peter Pauwels.

Fines:  Tom Fry for not knowing where toothpicks are. Ken Kelley for not asking for the introduction of guests-failed. Tim Pollak for fining the President. Bill Benton for disrupting the meeting-failed.

Announcements:  It was another sad day for the club. Shortly after the meeting had adjourned, it was observed that Dr. Kelsall was having some problems and was in need of help. Leslie, the club’s very own Florence Nightingale, went to Howie’s side to see if she could be of assistance while several members analyzed the situation and decided 911 needed to be called. Within just a couple minutes, the EMT’s were there and immediately started administering CPR and checking his vitals. A few minutes later they were taking Howie to Swedish Hospital. I left the Elk’s Club shortly after and by the time I got to work, Ken had left me a message that Howie had passed away. Dr. Charles H. Kelsall had been in failing health for sometime and when the time came, the Lord took him home. More details will be forwarded when I have them.     Howie Kelsall.pdf                    Florence Nightingale.doc

SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:      usarmy.gif

With the passing of Joe Geers last week, Ken read a past SOD report from Joe.

Joe (Herman) Geers was born at home to immigrant German parents on Dec. 7th, 1930, in St. Louis, Missouri, on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River. Joe attended Parochial schools and they are still standing but the High school was sold off several years ago. Joe went to the Missouri School of Mines with a degree in petroleum engineering and also a Master of Business Administration degree from St Louis Univ..

Joe had an Army ROTC commission and went to Ft. Belvore, VA where he went to engineering school. Joe received orders to go to Korea but was assigned to the Air Force and served with the Army Corp of Engineers. He bounced around Wyoming, Texas and California but never made it over to Korea.

He started his civilian career with Gulf Oil in 1952 and after the Army, Proctor and Gamble. In 1961 he was employed by Johns Manville. In their employment, he lived in New York and California. They transferred him to Colorado in 1970. He started a manufacture's rep business in 1980 and retired in 1995. Joe is now on his third kidney, first one in 1986.

Joe has been married to Shirley since 1952. They have 6 daughters, 5 of which live close by and a Son-in-law who has gone to Iraq several times. They also have about 13 grandkids. Several noteworthy grandchildren are Jim Hnida, a budding stage talent at Chatfield High School and Katie Hnida, the only female to score points as a big 12 football player. Their father is Dr. Dave Hnida on Channel 4 TV. Fred Downs brought Joe into the club 25 years ago. .      Listen to Ken tell Joe's story.mp3

Program:  Doug Harder introduced Dick Dedrick. Dick used to do voice over’s on radio and television and worked at many stations in Colorado. Doug had scheduled another program but they had to cancel so with all the advance notice Doug could give Dick (one day), Dick was more then gracious to share some stories with us today.

50-year broadcasting veteran: Radio and television ... narrator, writer, producer, photographer. He's been heard on hundreds of commercials, down through the years. His warm delivery truly catches the spirit of long-ago composers. 24 awards. Now semi-retired, living in Colorado with wife, Bobbe.

Dick is the Great-grandson of homesteaders in Kansas. “The Homestead Years” (one of the dvd’s Dick passed out) has been favorably reviewed by various trade magazines for schools and libraries. Award winner at Denver Video Festival.   Listen to DickDedrick.mp3

New CPR technique - a must see for all

Please Watch
If you haven't seen this, you should. If you have seen it, it won't hurt to see it again. This is a new CPR technique which is much simpler. This is a very important video regarding the latest CPR procedure. Please watch and forward to your friends and family if you haven't already done so. You never know, a life may be saved utilizing this new procedure.

(As a side note, reflecting on what was happening to Howie, I think we all need to be more pro-active in checking on and seeing if assistance is needed to our brothers and sisters. With all the years of safety training I have had with the Railroad, I was one that should have checked on him when it was obvisous that he was having some dificulties. Could I have made a difference in this case, I will never know but maybe if there is a next time, it will.)
