THIS WEEK IN REVIEW ....July 7, 2016
This weeks Reporter- Don Smith

Guests:    Alice Perkins, Jim’s wife: Vicky Oren, Rev. Jim’s LSC

FINES:  The new President was hit the hardest with fines today, ranging from Lack of Control of the meeting, the start of the song and just to make him feel welcome as the New President. Doug was fined for “starting the meeting” and Table “1” for having a guest (Vierthaler). I’m not sure anyone had to pay on this one, it commented on by President Bob that he would like to see more people move around and get to know the other members more.

Birthdays:   ?

Today was President Bob Buckland’s first day on the job and he did an excellent job of losing control from the start. Oh well, he has 51 more weeks to perfect his duties. If he doesn’t get it right this year, he may be doing a second term (no matter what the FBI says).

Bill Benton stepped right into his new (old) job of handing out toothpicks. He hasn’t lost his touch.

As a way to get members motivated, Dave Miley proposed he would match up to $100 any and all donations (total) to be put into the Foundation. When the dust settled, $380 was raised, along with a $50 IOU.

It appears we will NOT participate in this year’s Western Welcome Week. The main reason was the poor location they assigned us last year. We are asking them if they can give us a better spot or we may not do it this year. Apparently we have not heard back from them.

Here is the list of new Officers for the upcoming year: Go to 2016-2017 Officers list.txt   As a reminder, anyone and everyone is welcome to the monthly Board Meetings. The club is only as good as it’s members.

June 25 was the Leadership workshop conference and Bob Buckland, Bill Benton and Gary Athey attended the all-day event. Since there was no Program today, Gary gave a run down on what happened at the meeting and some things that Gary would like to see happen in and with the club.

July 9-10th is the Lodo Field of Dreams event. If you are interested in helping out or just attending, see Bob Buckland.

Aug 21st is the 5th Annual John Elway golf tournament. If interested, see Bill. $125 to play.

Remember, if you bring in a new member and he stays 6 months, you get Free Dues - per new member for a quarter. A couple members just qualified for this perk.

news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:    Gary Athey was born in Denver September 3, 1943. His family moved from the Denver area to Englewood in 1956, He attended Flood Jr. High and Englewood High School and graduated in 1961, then went to Denver University from which he graduated in 1965 and went on to D.U. Law School. He did not complete law school because he got caught up in the Vietnam era.

He decided to go into the service and get it behind him. He served 4 years in the Air Force going to Vietnam and working in various legal offices.

After separation from the Air Force, he worked for Gated Rubber Co. as a foreman and later as assistant plant manager for Carefree Corporation. In 1975 he took a job as a branch manager for Emblem tape and Label Co. in Salt Lake City.

From that job he opened a total of 3 other businesses and supplied the semiconductor and computer industries. He was divorced in 1981 and granted custody of his children. In 1983 he moved back to Englewood and cared for his parents and an uncle. He was fortunate to hold his business together due to some dedicated employees. Luckily he also found his current wife Pat in 1992. She has helped him immensely. He has had a very full life with many activities and longtime friends from high school, college and business. He looks forward to serving with his fellow Sertoma members.

Gary went into some details about what he learned at the District Conference a couple weeks ago and shared some of his ideas on what he would like to see Arapahoe Sertoma do and how to grow in the future. He also mentioned that since International no longer sells items with a Sertoma logo, he wants to see what items the club members would like to get like sweet shirts, T-shirts, hats…etc so we can advertise the club not just at lunch but out in the public.

In Gary’s short time in the club, he has taken it upon himself to gather the Bio’s of all the active members and put them in a nice binder. He wants the club to grow and be more involved in community events and fund raisers and I’m sure we will be hearing more of Gary’s thoughts and ideas in the future. Glad to have him in the club.

Program:  No program today but between Gary and President Bob, we had a round table discussion of “Why I joined Sertoma” and “Why do we continue to come”. Many members gave their stories as a way to motivate others to get more involved. President Bob says that this will happen more in the future, especially when there is no Program that day.

Dave Miley wants us to get the Club better noticed with more modern technoligies such as using Facebook and other media methods. Dave, and a couple others, have been updating information and photos on OUR Faceobook page. As it turns out, that is how Gary learned about the club through Dave and Facebook. We need someone, or everyone, to post more stories and photos on OUR Facebook page so don't be affraid to jump in. The link is at the bottom of this page.
