Quote: “Bureaucrats do not change the course of the ship of state – they merely adjust the compass”. Bob Hope

A Funeral was held for Mabe but a memorial will be later this month.

A tribute to Mabe was made by several members: Mabe was a great Program Chairman; He had hair (black); He did magic but he also made some of his own tricks.

The Perfect Attendance awards for last fiscal year go to: Mabe Downey, Dick Enslow, Scott Manley, Will Martinez, Jim Perkins, Tim Pollak and Don Smith. If you think you may have qualified, see Don Smith who has the complete list.

Pat informed us of his ride for MS, 75 miles each way from Denver to Ft. Collins and a night in one of the dorms. A total of $2.8 million was raised for MS in Colorado. Orian, who has MS, thanked Pat for his efforts and the club for donating.

Tim is soliciting ads for the Directory.

Tea Party Speakers by the Big tool Box at 8030 S. Holly between Dry Creek and County Line: Ken Buck and July 26 th @ 7pm: Dan Maes.

S.W. Sertoma golf tournament July 12. See Scott with your money.

Will Martinez has King Soopers coupons. The club receives 5% but only 4 people regularly use the service. The card is like a debit card so it’s easy to use.

Robert Douglas Harder (alias Doug) fittingly was born on a Labor Day. Sept 22, 1937 in an oil camp in Houston, Texas near the Rio Grande River. He didn’t stay there long enough to get tall. Doug attended grade schools in Louisiana and Missouri and the 5th through 11th grade (minus one year) in Casper, Wyoming. While in the fourth grade, he had Scarlet Fever. He finished high school in Englewood. He attended 21 schools in 20 years (slow learner?).

Doug was in the Army National Guard from 1959 to 1966 and said his squad did a fabulous job of keeping the Commies out of GA. After that, he attended CU and UNC and retired as a Mortgage Broker. He has been a member of Pastor Robinson’s church, Christ Lutheran, for over 46 years and an Elder for 38 years. Shortly after the Katrina disaster, he and Pastor Robinson went down there with a disaster relief team. He said you never want to see such destruction.

Doug has been married to Carolyn since 1963 and they have 4 children and 10 grandkids. Their oldest, Zach, was a member for a short time.

Doug was brought into the club by Bill Parchen in 1966 and has been president twice and has a Gold coat. He has been on the Foundation Committee and brought in over 50 members to Sertoma. (way to go Doug)

Since there was no program, Doug entertained us with some stories about him and Bill Parchen, when Bill was an Englewood Policeman and Doug was in high school. Doug says that Bill was the Barney Fife of his day. He took being a police officer way, way over the top. He would walk around holding his chest out showing off his badge. Back then, Doug would steal gas from Winslow Const. Company, they would roll under the fence with 5 gallon cans and fill them up. Englewood Police set up surveillance around 12:30 or 1am and Bill had his car parked in a place were there were some trees and Doug asked him later if that was to get some shade and Bill said yah, it’s hot. (it was midnight). Bill would sit in the car and Doug and his cohorts would rev up there cars and Bill thought they were trying to distract him but they had already gotten the gas.

One time Bill went to check on what some kids were doing near the Gothic Theater and pulled his gun and shot a hole right through the Gothic sign, breaking the neon lights. Another story, Bill had a skinny little partner that one time, fired his gun and shot the minute hand off the clock in Key Savings. The funniest thing Doug did to Parchen at a golf tournament in Phoenix was Bill hit a shot down and fairway and it hit Doug in the shoe and Doug fell. Bill comes rushing over and slapping Doug on the cheek and asking him if he was okay, Doug put his arm around Bill and gave him a kiss on the cheek and said “I’m so lonely” and Bill hit him.

Many laughs have been enjoyed because of this guys.

A day without sunshine is …………..night.

Inside every older person is a younger person wondering what the heck happened.

On the other hand, you have different fingers.
