news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:    The birth of Carl Duncan in 1930, like Fred Downs, ushered in the Great Depression. Carls parents were school teachers who maintained employment during this era in small rural schools. They met and were married in Burlington. Carl was born in 1930 in Alamosa and 2 weeks later, the family moved to Cortez, CO. and was there first 6 years of his life. The family moved to the coal mining community of Oak Creek in 1936 where the main form of entertainment was tackle football with or without pads.

In 1940 they relocated to Avondale, a gentle farm community 15 miles east of Pueblo on the Arkansas River where the main form of entertainment was softball. Carl mentioned that per capital, Avondale is the murder capital of the U.S. with 2 murders and a population of 350. In playing softball, Carls first painful learning experience was to catch a fly ball with the hands rather than in the chest like a football. Duncan obtained a BA degree from the Univ. of Colorado and was drafted during the Korean War into the 101st Air Borne, was a Company Clerk and was sent to Germany because he could speak the language. He had 5 months of heavy weapon training but ended up playing the French Horn in the band.

Carl recovered from the warped mentality instilled by the liberals at CU and obtained an MBA degree form DU and became a CPA, using the GI bill. In 1962 he settled in Denver and was unleashed as a CPA on an unsuspecting public. Carl was brought into the club June 2003 by Steve Bolyard. Carl was married in 1957 to ?? (he never says) they have 3 kids and 8 G-kids. Listen to Carl Duncan.mp3

Program:  Bob Schlageter introduced Andrea Costantine, Andrea Costantine *inspires others to make a difference* in the world by getting involved and *creating community* through *compassion, contribution and connection.*

Andrea teaches that each thought, behavior and action creates a ripple effect. She believes that when we come together, change can be made. *With a sense of community, separation dissipates, leading to happier, healthier, more compassionate human beings, who can then contribute back to others.*

Andrea Costantine.JPG

*Her latest book,* /Connected: 101 Ways to Be of Service and Create Community/ is due out Spring of 2012.

Andrea’s adoration for the human spirit is expressed through her workshops, speeches and books where*she teaches others how to lead with service and live with compassion and love.*

*Andrea Costantine witnessed her first example of compassionate service early in life,* when at five years old she saw her father give a box of fried chicken to a homeless man digging in the dumpster behind their family restaurant. As a teen, the only thing that kept her out of trouble (and her grades decent), was being involved in student government, where she contributed to both her school and the local community. *More recently, Andrea has volunteered for various non-profits, including the animal shelter where she adopted her two cats, literacy efforts, children’s services and local events.*

Professionally, Andrea has a Master’s Degree in Human Services: Counseling Studies, is a certified coach, and is a creative visionary entrepreneur at heart.    Listen to Andrea Costantine.mp3
