news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:     Norm Schillo took his turn on the docket electing to take advantage of this opportunity to speak of his ancestral past. His ethnic background is German. Almost every male on his family tree earned his living as a carpenter. Norm’s father became the superintendent of specialized housing construction..

At one point, Norm mentioned he is 86 years old (should have remained quiet Norm, the club was betting 24). Feeling the memories, joys and pains, Norm was pretty choked up by the end of his presentation.

Norm Schillo, born 10 Sep, 1927 and raised in north Denver (and proud of it). He is proud to now be an octogenarian. He attended public school in north Denver. Of the 5 elementary schools, 2 have been demolished. He went to Skinner Jr. High and North High.

Norm went into the Navy in 1945, the same day he graduated from high school, for WWII. The war ended while he was in boot camp and although he didn’t get to Sail the High Seas, he did get to Puget Sound. He messed around for a couple years after the Navy. His father finally got a hold of him and convinced him to pick a trade. He went into bricklaying. He started his own company after 7 years. He ran that business for 13 years. Then had a marina in Granby for 2 years and then sold real estate for 2 years. He eventually got into homebuilding and did well for 15 years before the economy dropped out so he retired. Norm worked with Mike Magee and Will Martinez when he was learning what manual labor means.

He had 3 daughters with his first wife, Mary Lou. He met his second wife Ann while playing Tennis with Tommy Fry at Pinehurst and they were married in 1997. From that marriage he inherited several more family members. He was married to Ann for 15 years, she passed away not to long ago.

Norm has 3 daughters, 5 g-kids and 11 gg-kids on his side. Ann had 4 sons and 10 g-kids & 1 great grandchild. Bill Anderson brought him into the club. Listen to Norm Schillo.mp3

Program:  Mike Magee introduced Dan Jordan head coach of the Alaska Nanooks Rifle team.
Dan Jordan enters his eighth year as the head coach of the Alaska Nanooks Rifle team. In his short time as coach of the program, he has built an impressive resume.

Alaska Rifle won the NCAA Championships in Jordan's first three years as head coach, bringing the program's total to 10 national crowns overall, and nine of which were captured in the last 11 years. Under his tutelage, two Nanooks have claimed individual titles, as Jamie Beyerle won her first smallbore title with his coaching in 2006, and Patrik Sartz became the first international shooter to claim the air rifle title in 2008. In addition to that, he has led 11 shooters to All-American status.

Jordan was named the Alaska Athletic Department's Coach of the Year for both 2006 and 2007, and was awarded the NCAA Rifle Coach of the Year three straight years (2005-2008).

Jordan began his involvement with shooting at the age of nine as a member of the 4-H Club. He was involved with competitive shooting for a number of years before coming to Alaska to attend UAF and shoot for the rifle team.

He earned All-American honors as both a freshman and sophomore, while finishing second in the NCAAs in air rifle during his freshman season. Injured in an accident in the summer following his sophomore season, Jordan took two years off, and then resumed training for the Paralympics. He went on to win a silver medal in men's three-position rifle at the 2004 Paralympics.

While he was training, Jordan became involved in coaching and spent one year coaching the West Valley High School rifle team prior to leaving Fairbanks.

Jordan is a native of Franktown, Colorado, near Colorado Springs. He and his wife Amber live in Fairbanks. http://alaskananooks.com/coaches.aspx?rc=104 Listen to Dan Jordan.mp3
