news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:    Randy Smith, our resident speech and hearing specialist, is a native of Natchez, Mississippi, being born in 1950, then moving to Louisiana where he attended school. He was a newspaper carrier and a disk jockey (Rock’n Randy’s Electric Radio Show). He earned a bachelor’s degree from N.E. Louisiana Univ. in Monroe, LA. Randy did graduate work at LSU and got a job at McNeese State Univ. He was a speech and hearing consultant for the Special Ed. Dept. After six years there, he wanted to do post graduate work and was accepted to CU. He specialized in speech pathology in neurogenic speech and language problems and voice problems. He came to Colorado to do some graduate work and received a Post Graduate Degree at C.U. He stayed in Colorado he had a job at Porter Hosp. and he met Amie (who worked at Swedish), got married (about a year before joining Sertoma in 1987) and had two children. He was employed by Porter Hospital for 11 years and now in his own private practice since 1990. Lakewood Hearing & Speech

Randy has a good number of fond memories from living there and decided to share some with his predominately Yankee audience. His childhood home was a mere two miles from the Mississippi river. They hadn’t heard of air conditioning so his bedroom window was open at night. He’d fall asleep to the sounds of the calliopes being played on the riverboat passing on the Mississippi and in the morning, it became his wake up call.

Program:  Doug Harder introduced our speaker today, Luke Sterk. Luke used to work for TSA and although he couldn’t tell us all the fine details involved in the screening of passengers at the airports, he was able to give us an overview of things to do and not do so you don’t end up getting pulled from the line or causing a delay for everyone else.

Being a TSA agent seems to be a very stressful job with a high turnover. They are having to learn new stuff all the time and of course have to know how to deal with people and sometimes people that are not very happy due to long lines or about to miss their flight.

One thing that was mentioned was if you have any metal in your body such as bone replacements; tell one of the agents at the beginning of the lines so they can direct you to the proper place for screening. AND, as if it has to be mentioned, DON’T BRING YOUR GUN TO THE AIRPORT…..dah
