Announcements:   The membership of Dick Johnson will be voted on shortly, there was some paper work problems. We havn't forgotten about you Dick, apperently the application got misplaced and has to be filled out again.

New link below that is an index of the programs we have had in the past and the date. So far I have back from present to 2005.

Poker Tournament is on us. Lets hope all have enjoyed it and it was fruitful for the causes. Pat reported it was pretty much sold out so that is great, and, Pat stated that if he gets taken out, he will put $50 in the pot…….IT IS DOCUMENTED so lets see what happened.

George Hannes thought we should get all the old club records converted to CD-DVD format for storage and easy distribution. One reason for going through the old records is to show how much the club has given in the past, it is estimated to be over $1.5 million dollars. Dave Miley has about 5 boxes taking up room at his house. It was also brought up at the board meeting to start the process of converting with Ken Kelley volunteering to get things rolling.

Will Martinez has King Soopers coupons. The club receives 5% but only 4 people regularly use the service. The card is like a debit card so it’s easy to use.

Mike Magee has set up a tour of Invesco Field April 22nd at 2:00 pm.

SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:      usnavy.gif

Bob Stein, with a pocket full of quarters, is the SOD today. Bob is a Denver native, is the oldest of five kids and has been up here since 1974, giving his life history. Bob is married to Diane with about 49 years under his belt, has one daughter, one son-in-law and one grandchild (keeps it simple that way). Gary Castle got him into Sertoma. Bob has been past President (86-86) – Gold Coat, and past District Governor in 1989. Back then, there was only one District with 17 clubs which kept him busy trying to visit all of them on a timely manor.

(Bob just remembered how many quarters he gave out today)

Bob decided to enlisted in the Navy instead of finishing college and took training to be a Fire Control Officer (they don’t put out fires, they compute all kinds of things before firing the big guns). About half way through that he got into submarine school. The first part of the training was to learn about every system on the boat. He was able to get duty in Pearl Harbor. He was assigned to the third nuclear sub ever built. He then got to go back to school to learn the fire control systems on a new sub in Long Beach. Bob figured out that the more schools he went to, the less time he would be on a ship. He was the junior member of the crew so he was almost an E-5 but still got stuck with mess duty (this was around 1961). This was during the cold war so their duty was to keep an eye on the Russians. The only limit on their duty at sea was how much food they could stuff on board. So he got to go to the North Pole, test weapons, chase Russians, learn to dive, and all other sorts of fun stuff, not to forget that he went around the world about 22 times. He didn’t want to leave Hawaii but he eventually did and came back home and started doing new systems for a new sub. He was then stationed in Spain and got to patrol the Mediterranean. He eventually took the test to go to E-8 and passed, but declined the commission and got out of the service.

After the service, Bob started several banks in the area, started a Car Wash with another Sertoman. You can hear Bob’s story of the day by clicking here:   BobStein.mp3

Program:   Doug Harder was told last night by the program that she had made a mistake and would not be able to be the program today so Doug filled in as program in his usual charm and humor.

Doug Harder.JPG

Doug told how he was informed about the program cancelation, then about a baseball game with Englewood High School baseball team is playing at Coors field, playing against Canyon City High School May 9th and after that game, then you get to see a Rockies game. Then there is another game you can see the Rockies play Aug 4th. This is supporting Englewood High School. Doug broke down the cost but I was so confused you will need to listen to the audio to figure it out. If you don’t want to go to the game, you can make a donation to Englewood High so see Doug about all the details on this. Sounds like a pretty good deal.

After Doug told a story or two, he then opened the floor for any funny moments or embarrassing things that have happen and several members told some stories. (I had to do some editing of a couple comments).

Listen to Doug and others tell their stories: DougHarder.mp3
