Services are set for 11AM, Saturday March 25th, Mississippi Ave Baptist Church in Aurora (13231 E Mississippi Ave, Aurora, CO 80012 which is about 2 blocks west of I-225 and E. Mississippi Ave. on the north side of the Ave.). Cremation is next week with Internment in Port Arthur, Texas with her folks. Mike Appreciates calls of concern from Sertoman's. 303-220-5644

Norm Schillo is scheduled to have surgery in the upcoming weeks but is trying to get it moved up.

Doug Harder mentioned the Past Presidents get-together for next Tue. But as of this weekend, it’s been cancelled due to the facility is not available.

Doug also mentioned an upcoming membership meeting. Bob then said he attended the Round Table this last Monday and that Arapahoe was not to well represented. Also we need to raise more money, somehow.

Bob Buckland and maybe Scott Manley will be attending a meeting April 1st to see what can be done with the money raised in the past “Walk’s” that was held a couple years ago and the money that is sitting in the bank that hasn’t been donated yet. We have a couple ideas and since we helped raise about 75% of the money, we might have a say in how that money is donated.

Dave Miley announced we will have a club outing to K-1 Racing again this year. It will be held March 17th, a Friday. Same format as last year and if you own a helmet, you are welcome to use it instead of theirs. THERE IS PLENTY OF ROOM SO INVITE FRIENDS AND RELATIVES SO WE HAVE A GREAT TURNOUT.

Dave also mentioned that the Englewood Chamber is having a GALA event March 28th at the Elks club, 6-10pm and $25/person or you can sponsor a table. See Dave for more details.

Remember, if you bring in a new member and he stays 6 months, you get Free Dues - per new member for a quarter.  A couple members just qualified for this perk.

news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:   Randy Smith, our resident speech and hearing specialist, is a native of Natchez, Mississippi, being born in 1950, then moving to Louisiana where he attended school. He was a newspaper carrier and a disk jockey (Rock’n Randy’s Electric Radio Show). He earned a bachelor’s degree from N.E. Louisiana Univ. in Monroe, LA. Randy did graduate work at LSU and got a job at McNeese State Univ. He was a speech and hearing consultant for the Special Ed. Dept. After six years there, he wanted to do post graduate work and was accepted to CU. He specialized in speech pathology in neurogenic speech and language problems and voice problems. He came to Colorado to do some graduate work and received a Post Graduate Degree at C.U. He stayed in Colorado he had a job at Porter Hosp. and he met Amie (who worked at Swedish), got married (about a year before joining Sertoma in 1987) and had two children. He was employed by Porter Hospital for 11 years and now in his own private practice since 1990. Lakewood Hearing & Speech

Randy has a good number of fond memories from living there and decided to share some with his predominately Yankee audience. His childhood home was a mere two miles from the Mississippi river. They hadn’t heard of air conditioning so his bedroom window was open at night. He’d fall asleep to the sounds of the calliopes being played on the riverboat passing on the Mississippi and in the morning, it became his wake up call.

Randy announced he has sold his business and is now semi-retired. Good Job Randy, join the rest of us. Listen to Randy Smith.mp3

Program: Scott Manley has arranged for our Foundation to donate $500 to the Marion Downs Center and got Jill Wayne who is now their Associate Director to show up today to be our Program and received the donation.

Jill gave a little history of how the Center for Hearing, Speech and Language merged with Marion Downs Center and gave some history of Marion Downs.

The Marion Downs Center is recognized worldwide for its leadership, progressive innovations and cutting edge clinical service. Its mission to value and promote individual and family choice in treatment, technology, and communication options for individuals with hearing loss and their families is unique. The Marion Downs Hearing Center has merged with the Center for Hearing, Speech and Language. For 96 years, the Center for Hearing, Speech and Language has had a remarkable presence in Colorado. Their extraordinary legacy was built through enriching people’s lives by providing innovative, caring, and high-quality services for people with barriers to communication, regardless of financial status.

Now, these two organizations have combined their efforts into the new Marion Downs Center, a “Center of Excellence” with a combined vision to serve our community with the highest level of service, support, and education. https://mariondowns.com/          Listen to Jill Wayne.mp3
