SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:  Fred Downs

The birth of FRED DOWNS in Rochelle LA in 1929 was co-incidental with the start of the Great Depression. Fred and his parents moved between LA and TX until they settled in Magnolia Arkansas in 1944.
Fred graduated from Magnolia HS in 1947, completed 2 years at Magnolia A & M in 1949, graduated from The Univ of Arkansas in 1952 and joined the Navy, attended OCS, earned a commission and became a civilian again in 1956 and began a career as a geologist.
Fred worked for Gulf Oil and Sun Oil. He was involved in the exploration for hydrocarbons in the book cliffs area near Grand Junction. He also was employed by Johns Manville until 1982.
He joined the Sertoma club in 1979 and was the principal editor of this bulletin for many years. (He had a whole lot more to say but I lost track of it all).

Program: Presented by the illustrious Mabe Downey with his "Chicken caught in his throat" routine.

Dave Myer was here to talk about D.I.S.C. He started out telling a story about 4 Knights of the Round Table, that were going to be be-headed. the guillotine came down and nothing happened. They frist 3 Knights were released and made some statements to King Arther about their inosence and went on their way. The fourth Knight was released, looked at the guillotine, and announced that he knew the reason for the machine malfunctioning and can fix it. (as I remember the story). The point was, there are four type of people and each has a different way of communicating.
