Governor Cindy Markam from Southglenn Sertoma came to remind us of the Club Development Workshop April 29th at the Lowery Conference Center ($30/person). International is requiring Cindy and Bill Cherf to have at least 4 members from each club attend. This will focus on recruitment and retention. Also, Cindy reminded us of the up-coming District Leadership Conference and Award Luncheon on Aug. 12th. Location to be determined and it will be breakfast and lunch Third is the Regional Convention in Las Cruces, N.M Oct. 12-14 Lastly a meeting this Sat. Apr. 1st at Bill Cherf’s house, hoping at least one member from each club shows up so they can decide on what to do with the nearly $8,000 that was raised from the first two Walks.. Joe Carol is filling in for Mike Camillio (sp) as Reginal Director. Listen to Cindy Markam.mp3

Linda Holloway came to pitch the Awards available to the clubs for achieving certain goals. As she read them off, it appears we are eligible about all of them IF we get the applications in on time. After we receive any of the patch’s, we will need a seamstress and I almost heard Cindy volunteer. Listen to Linda Holloway.mp3

Doug Harder had is Past Presidents meeting after today’s lunch. They are looking to fill the Officer positions for the next year and may have to have some members stay on the job they hold now or take another position OR you may be asked to do a job you just did a couple years ago. Since our membership is going down, we need all the help we can get so if you are just sitting there enjoying yourself, step up and help out. Names were put to the positions and those lucky people will be contacted. The club is only as strong as the membership wants it to be.

Bob Buckland and maybe Scott Manley will be attending a meeting April 1st to see what can be done with the money raised in the past “Walk’s” that was held a couple years ago and the money that is sitting in the bank that hasn’t been donated yet. We have a couple ideas and since we helped raise about 75% of the money, we might have a say in how that money is donated.

news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:    Jack Thompson showed up for lunch so he got hooked for the roll of SOD. Jack was born in Omaha, NE in 1944 and within 3 months, the family moved to Minnesota, growing up in S. Minneapolis. His high school is now the community center. He says the only thing he did there was being on the first varsity ski team they ever had. Skiing on those little hills they had were a joke and he had to wear a mask like you paint with to stay warm and spent more time on the lift then skiing, it just didn’t cut it and after coming to Colorado to ski several times, he later was able to transfer out here with Merrill Lynch. He enjoys it so much he skis every week.

Jack worked his way through school working at a bank and they had a Merrill Lynch office in the building so he would go and watch the stocks and buy the penny stocks and play around a little bit and ended up working for Lynch and they sent him to NY. He was a manage and was in 5 cities in 5 years and he told them he was going to Denver saying he could live here for half of what they were paying him to live in NY and after 3 months, they sent him here and Lynch was his entire career for 39 years until retiring last year. He needed something to do so he joined “us old codgers”. Jack tried to go into the Air Force right after collage but with his allergies they wouldn’t take him.

Jack has 2 children, his daughter is a teacher but enjoys going to school, working on her third degree and his son is in the Air Force and can ski circles around him. Jack again entertained us with stories of a neighbor he had, the poor guy just couldn’t do anything right and Jack was there to see it all (and sometimes to help out).  Jack attempted to join the Air Force OCS but he was rejected for medical reasons.   Listen to Jack Thompson.mp3

Program: Carl Duncan introduced his nephew Norman Kincaide. Norman was instrumental in preventing the U.S. Government from forcing land owners in the S.E. corner of Colorado into giving up their property rights.

Because of the efforts of the Southeast Colorado Private Property Rights Council, residents were prepared when the Canyons and Plains Sustainability Partnership hosted their National Heritage Area (NHA) community information meetings held all across South Eastern Colorado in June. The meetings were supported by the National Park Service (NPS), Canyons and Plains, and Palmer Land Trust representatives.

While there were a few residents supporting the NHA who believed in accepting federal funding regardless of strings attached (i.e. money is money), the majority believed the collateral consequences of giving up some sovereignty to an unelected management board advised by the NPS was too costly a price to support the NHA.
