THIS WEEK IN REVIEW ....May 11, 2006
This weeks Reporter-Carl Duncan

Penland's growth contest was an under whelming success. We added only two members last year: both came from efforts of Phil Grimm's team. Undaunted, Penland has agreed to try one more year as Growth Chairman and hopes to get it right this year.

Dowdey has started a scrapbook featuring Bill Worth which he plans to give to Carol. He is asking for personal notes from any of us who would like to write something about our experiences with Bill which he will paste in the scrapbook. For all that Bill Worth did for our club, we should be able to fill that book.

The District Leadership Conference is scheduled for Saturday, June 6th and the Regis Univ. building at 7600 Orchard Road. All new officers and Board Members should plan to be there. (See below)

THE HANDSHAKE PRIZE was awarded to Mike McGee for suggesting that the grocery certificates would make a fine Mothers' Day gift for the wife. They also make money for the club.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: The annual officer installation banquet will take place on June 23 at the Red Rocks Country Club. Cocktails at 6 and dinner at 7. Plan ahead and be there.

Will Martinez's wife, Marie, has been hospitalized and our wishes for a speedy recovery are extended to her.

BINGO: Bingo is once again alive and well. C team deposited $5,663 and counted 129 players in attendance. Harder got 17 names of people willing to substitute for regular team members whenever the need arises. Campbell and Pollak are training to be callers.Bingo Starts at 7:00pm so get there early.

Jim Helmick was born in Toledo Ohio on August 8, 1936. At the age of 19 he matriculated in the University of Toledo and 10 years later received his degree in electrical engineering. In the meantime, he got married and fathered 3 children who have produced so far 7 grandchildren. He started working for Johns Mansville in 1965. In 1974 he had to choose between staying married or moving to Colorado. Since his wife wished to stay in Toledo with the kids and grand kids, and since it is obvious that Jim is here in Colorado, the choice is clear. Jim held various positions with JM including director of fiber glass research and director of marketing.
After spending sometime in California in the minerals division, Jim left JM in 1990 and returned to Colorado. Rich Carlson brought him into the club in 1998. Mike Mcgee, the handshake prize winner, won the "flying five".

PROGRAM:  Greg Moody, critic at large for CBS channel 4, was our speaker. He had done some acting and had taken courses in speech and voice projection in college which training is evident in his speaking ability. Early in his career he did radio work in Milwaukee and Grand Rapids. but his chosen profession as an entertainment critic required experience in order to get a job. In order to break this catch 22 barrier he used his journalism skills to write up 5 critiques for free and submitted them to a prospective employer. He got the job and has been doing it every since.

The high point in his career was an interview with Bob Hope. Moody was one of several reporters, but when he mentioned a 1927 performance of Hope, he attracted Hope's attention and was taken aside for a personal interview and some quality time with the comedian.

Moody always buys his own ticket in order to attend a performance. Even when a comp ticket is available, Moody buys his own ticket and then chooses which one will be the best seat. Critics are themselves often the objects of criticism, but maintaining one's integrity in spite of this is commendable.

McGee   ?   McGee

Mike would have been the triple crown winner but he left early.
