news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:    Rick Campbell showed up late and was picked for the SOD today. Rick Campbell was born in Elgin, Illinois in 1953.  Grew up in Illinois, went to High School at Glenbard West at Hilltop. It is still standing. Served in the military for 2 weeks, he was number 5 in the draft. Two weeks prior to reporting for basic, Nixon called off the draft but he did get inducted into the Army. Rick went on to College of DuPage in Illinois. Started as an electrical engineer, but did not like the number crunching as much as fixing cars.

Rick went to college for a year. He came out to Colorado on a ski vacation and enjoyed walking around in a tee shirt in the middle of winter (1973) and decided to come out and stay permanently. He had met Renee when he was in High School, they started dating during college and she came along when Rick moved west in 1974. They have been happily married for 35 years and they have 3 girls. The eldest of his daughters is a teacher at Ft. Logan Elementary. The middle child is a nurse at Porter. The youngest is a homemaker due to the recently arrival of twins. Rick and Renee now have 7 grand kids. One of the grand kids was born on 5-5-05.

Rick runs an auto collision repair service which he opened in 1979 and it’s close to the Elks' club (which is convenient because of the poor driving abilities of the club).  His dad was in the auto body parts business. He gave Rick a beat up car and told him by the time you get it all fixed up, you will be old enough to drive it. Dr. Tim brought Rick into the club and he as held several chairs including President.    Listen to Rick.mp3

Program:  Peter Pauwels introduced Joe Sloan from Denver water and Joe came to talk to us today about water issues in Colorado..

Each day, the average Denver Water residential customer uses 86 gallons of water. But the average customer often doesn’t think about how Denver gets its water or the planning that goes into delivering that water.
Denver Water manages its supply and demand with careful research and analysis regarding streamflow, diversions, climate, customer demand and population estimates to ensure there will be an adequate supply of clean, reliable Denver water well into the future.

The majority of Denver’s water comes from rivers and streams fed by mountain snowmelt. The South Platte River, Blue River, Williams Fork River and Fraser River watersheds are Denver Water’s primary water sources, but it also uses water from the South Boulder Creek, Ralston Creek and Bear Creek watersheds. Dillon Reservoir is Denver Water’s largest storage facility and holds nearly 40 percent of Denver’s water.

Denver Water collects readings at stream gauges and reservoirs throughout the system to track streamflow, diversions, snowpack and other water-supply data. The data in the following reports reflect average conditions over the course of 24 hours at the reporting locations. All data are preliminary and subject to revision. For more information, call 303-628-6510 (please direct other general questions to 303-628-6000). The Colorado Division of Water Resource’s Water Talk phone line at 303-831-7135 provides current streamflow information at stream gages located throughout Colorado. http://www.denverwater.org/    Listen to Joe.mp3
