This year’s Christmas Party was discussed with the Girls Club after lunch. It will be at the Elks club and the date is Tuesday, Dec. 20th. A sign-up sheet will go around starting next week and for now it looks like it will start at 5:30 cocktails & 6:30 dinner followed by a DJ playing all your favorites and dancing. There will be a gathering of toys (un-wrapped) to be donated to Toys for Tots and we might have them come and tell us about their organization if it can be arranged. Toy value something like $10 to $15 and we hope to have more information soon on all the plans. Dinner for now looks like Chicken or Beef and maybe a Vegie plate, all served by the Ladies of the Elks Club. Cost looks like $20 per person. Friends and relatives are invited and the theme of this years party is……FUN.

There will NOT be a regular lunch that week, Dec. 22nd.

Remember, if you bring in a new member and he stays 6 months, you get Free Dues - per new member for a quarter. A couple members just qualified for this perk.

news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:    Jim Helmick had the honors once again. Jim was born in Toledo Ohio on August 11, 1936, on the banks of the Maumee River. At the age of 19 he enrolled into the University of Toledo and 10 years later received his degree in Electrical Engineering. In the meantime, he got married and fathered 3 children who have produced so far 7 grandchildren. While in night school, he worked at a large hardware store from 54-60, and at Toledo Scale from 60-64. His work caused him to travel a lot, going to Texas, Alabama, Nebraska, Iowa, New Jersey, California and Colorado. Jim was born between wars and although he did register for the draft, he was not called.

He started working for Johns Mansville in 1965, George Hannes hired him in Ohio. In 1974 he had to choose between staying married or moving to Colorado. Since his wife wished to stay in Toledo with the kids and grand kids, and since it is obvious that Jim is here in Colorado, the choice is clear. Jim later remarried and is now married to Barbara, his wife of 37 years and he has 2 daughters and a son plus about 7 grandkids and one great grandchild.

Jim held various positions with J.M. including director of fiber glass research and director of marketing. After spending sometime in California in the minerals division, Jim left J.M. in 1990 and returned to Colorado in 1998. Rich Carlson brought him into the club in 1998. Listen to Jim Helmick.mp3

Program:  Doug heard about the program today from his guest, Chuck Duncan. The program was Scott Perry who is a football fan and has a book that has so much detail about the clubs it will make your head spin.

Why this book will brighten your football life?

This publication is so unlike anything out there Denver’s CBS affiliate made Scott the Fan Of The Week on the Bronco’s Coaches show during the team’s 7th and latest run to an AFC Championship in late 2013.

The idea behind ranking all clubs by regular season winning percentage was born in April1986 after the Denver
Broncos failed to make the playoffs with a record of 11-5 (NFL record tied by New England in 2008 after going 16-0 in ’07). The Cleveland Browns won the AFC Central at 8-8 and hosted the Dolphins while Denver fans went Skiing.

The Patriots took that tie breaker, won four road games and became victim number two in a 13 year run when the NFC would not let an AFC team hoist the Lombardi trophy. Walter Payton and the rest of the shuffling Chicago Bears took that ’85 title. The second to last straw was the fact the ’84 season was ended by the Pittsburgh Steelers. They came to Denver with 9 wins and made pointless the 13-3 season of John Elway in his first year of being a starter.

It had been 5 seasons since Scott moved back to Colorado from Rochester NY and still no playoff wins to give a glimmer of championship hope. (Non-Denver fans can skip down to the *)
