THIS WEEK IN REVIEW .... October 13, 2011
This weeks Reporter-Don Smith

This week was a bit different than usual as those that had signed up for the A-1 Scuba tour were the only ones for lunch. Only 2 guests joined the members and the short trip to A-1’s pool which is at Oxford and Santa Fe. Lunch was at 1pm followed by everyone killing some time, then a mass move to the pool at 3pm.

Once at the pool, Scott gave us a run down on what was going to happen shortly and we were introduced to some of the staff and volunteers. A 17 year old surfer from Hawaii who had injured his spine and is almost a complete quadriplegic was to arrive shortly for his first dip in the pool and attempt at scuba diving. Anna Marie gave us a very detailed description of the procedure to get the young man into the pool, some of the means of communication he would have with his care givers and then get him into his gear and take him under. She described how difficult it is to dress a person who has no feelings in the fingers and toes while trying to get the tight, sticky wet suit on. If they are not careful, they can bend the fingers or toes back and break them.

As you can imagine (or maybe not), not being able to move and talk while being taken under water would have to be very traumatic. Several people were around him at all times and if he had to communicate, he would move his head front to back or side to side, plus move his eyes to signal a response.

Since we were getting so late into the afternoon and no one wanted to fight the rush hour commute, we decided to postpone the trip to the Aquarium until Nov. 17th at which time we will meet at 11am for a tour, then lunch at noon at Landry’s. This will be in place of the regular meeting that day. The Aquarium tour will be free and Bob is going to try to get a reduced lunch price.

Do to the A-1 Scuba outing, the board meeting will be pushed to Oct 20th.

Jim Rees has King Soopers coupons. The club receives 5% but only 4 people regularly use the service. The card is like a debit card so it’s easy to use.

Upcoming programs:

Oct 20: Randy Hampton; DOW merger w/State Parks & Black Bears
