This year’s Christmas Party was discussed with the attending board members and it was decided to have it at the Elks club. The date looks like Tuesday, Dec. 20th. The hall is supposed to be already decorated and the price is a lot cheaper.

Remember, if you bring in a new member and he stays 6 months, you get Free Dues - per new member for a quarter. A couple members just qualified for this perk.

news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:    Doug Harder did his best impersonation of Doug Harder.

The ever entertaining Doug Harder enlightened us again today as to his background and achievements. Robert Douglas Harder (alias Doug) fittingly was born on a Labor Day. Sept 22, 1937 in an oil camp in Houston, Texas near the Rio Grande River. He didn’t stay there long enough to get tall. Doug attended grade schools in Louisiana and Missouri and the 5th through 11th grade (minus one year) in Casper, Wyoming. While in the fourth grade, he had Scarlet Fever. He finished high school in Englewood. He attended 21 schools in 20 years (slow learner?).

Doug was in the Army National Guard from 1959 to 1966 and said his squad did a fabulous job of keeping the Commies out of GA. After that, he attended CU and UNC and retired as a Mortgage Broker. He has been a member of Pastor Robinson’s church, Christ Lutheran, for over 49 years and an Elder for 409 years. Shortly after the Katrina disaster, he and Pastor Robinson went down there with a disaster relief team. He said you never want to see such destruction.

Doug has been married to Carolyn since 1963 and they have 4 children and 10 grandkids and 2 great grandkids. Their oldest son Zach, was a member for a short time.

Doug was brought into the club by Bill Parchen in 1966 and has been president twice and has a Gold coat. He has been on the Foundation Committee and brought in about 60 members to Sertoma. (way to go Doug).

Program:  Tim Pollak introduced our speaker today, Dr. Andy Mannsfeld. With Andy was Mike Boehler, both are with Promann Healthcare Consulting. Dr. Mannsfeld’s talk today is on genetic testing.

Various forms of genetic testing are now available and can save the lives of you and your loved ones. These tests are typically covered by insurance and Medicare/Medicaid if they are indicated.

Pharmacogenetic testing determines how people will react to medications and can help avoid some of the 125,000+ deaths that occur in the US every year due to adverse drug reactions.

Genetic cancer-risk screening looks at over 30 gene mutations that can lead to melanoma, breast, ovarian, endometrial, prostate, stomach, colorectal and pancreatic cancers. By finding out if you or your loved ones have these gene mutations, we can prevent or treat much earlier and more effectively these cancers.

Pre-conception genetic testing looks at over 2,500 gene mutations that can cause over 60 genetically inherited diseases. This testing is for any women or are considering having children in the future, even if they already have healthy children. Over 80% of these diseases occur in children where the family has no history of these diseases. This test allows families to plan better and can give great peace of mind.

Learn more about these tests and how they can save the lives of your loved ones!!more about these tests and how they can save the lives of your loved ones!!
