news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:   We finally got Glenn Combellick up front to tell us about his life.

Glenn Combellick was born in Billings, MT on May 8th, 1924. He lived, attended school and fished there until he left to join the Navy from 1946-1948 & never left the US. While there, he got into playing marbles and, at the age of 12, won the City Tournament. He also won the next year and he says those were his “athletic years”, 1936 and 1937, when he was in junior high school. Glenn played marbles in the dirt lot next to his house so much he had dirt embedded in his hand. He says he was a “good” kid and didn’t get caught doing anything bad.

Glenn graduated from high school in 1941 and was in the Navy from Dec. 3rd, 1942 until Sep. 29th, 1945. He stayed in the States the whole time, being trained. Then he came to Denver and graduated at DU in 1948, followed by passing his CPA exam and into private practice in Englewood for 27 years until he retired in 1976 at 52 years old. Married Vernie Aug 29, 1948 and has 4 kids, 8 grandkids and 2 great grandchild. He indicated his son in Alaska retired this year and will continue to live in Alaska.

Glenn has been a member of Arapahoe Sertoma since 1955 and brought into the club by the charter President. Back then there were 80 members. Thanks for being part of the club, Glenn. Listen to Glenn Combellick.mp3

Program:  Dave Miley introduced Del Hessel, an athlete, coach and author of several books.

Del Hessel, former Colorado State University Head Track & Field Coach and US Olympic Training Center Coach, first coach in Division I history to coach three track and field programs and take each to the NCAA championships; was a nationally-ranked 800 meter runner!

As an athlete Del Hessel was ranked as one of the nation's Top 10 800 meter runners. He competed in the NCAA championships, the USA championships, and the US Olympic trials. He received the "Nye" award as the most Outstanding Athlete at Colorado State his senior year and later was voted in to the Colorado State "Hall of Fame."

Coach Hessel coached in the high school ranks for five years before starting a remarkable college coaching career. He has an outstanding grasp of all of the track and field events and his program has produced over 90 NCAA All-American in a wide variety of events. It is his philosophy that the head coach should be able to coach all of the track and field events with accuracy and energy. Coach Hessel has spoken at coaches clinic in nearly every state in the union covering nearly all events. He has coached track and field in the Division 1 ranks for nearly 40 years in three different conferences and been voted "Conference Coach of the Year" 16 times.

Besides his head coaching duties he served as president of the coaches cross-country association, was the head coach for the US Olympic Sports Festival southern team held at the Air Force Academy, served on the Olympic development staff for the middle distance events for 10 years, was on the World Cup staff and the USA vs Great Britain staff and has given numerous lectures on training at the US Olympic training center in California. While at CSU he was the first coach in the conference to break BYU's long time strangle hold on the conference title for both men and women. Listen to Del Hessel.mp3
