Guests: n/a

Fines:   Dick Enslow announced that we have no new changes on our upcoming golf events. Dick was applauded for his brevity and having used only six “ehs.” Ed Bezjak, in his never ending quest to fill the club treasure chest, then fined Orian Hunter $.50c for gross verbosity.

Announcements:   Our President of the day was Doug Harder, filling in for the vagabond fishy character, Peter Pauwels. So you know this means our meeting was very low key and calm at all times. NOT! Fines ran rampant, too many to recall all. We had a very pleasant visit from one of our part time members, Bob Gallagher. Both he and Doug ended up paying a two-bit fine. Bob was on hand to introduce our program.

Tim Pollak had his typical multiple announcements 1: Anybody needing new inserts for their Sertoma name and reference manuals should let him know. 2: The Incentives Committee is asking the club to provide names of persons they feel should be candidates for the Sertoman of the Year and Service to Mankind awards. If you have a good idea, let Tim know.

Next was Orian “King” hunter who spoke and spoke and on and on concerning the preparations for the Club Christmas Party. Some say were it not for his infirmaries he’d gone on maybe for hours. Actually he had done a good job. The party is to be held Dec. 14th at Buell Mansion residential location, doors open at 6pm. We will be partying in the Buell Mansion itself. All needed directions will be provided. Total cost per person is $38.00 with the club paying an additional $10.00 per attendee. Booze will be BYOB with ice, set-ups, etc. being provided. SORRY, red wine is not allowed because of some very expensive antique carpeting in many of the rooms and the home being listed by the Denver Historical Society.

At this point, John Vierthaler moved to the front of the room, grabbed the mike and lauded glories and praises upon the head of our upcoming program. This was done in perfect lawyer speak.

news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

Sertoman of the Day:   Dave Miley deviated from the traditional SOD format. HE brought a roll of quarters with him and awarded a quarter to the first member who could answer a trivia question concerning a specific item from his history all of which he had covered in previous SOD presentations. He asked each member only collect once but going home I’m told Mike Magee drove to close to the airport radar detection system and the FAA is still questioning him.

Dave Miley was born on the day FDR was inaugurated for the 3rd time, Jan 20th, 1941, in Indianapolis, Ind., next to the White River, in the Merion Co. Methodist Hospital (the same hospital the race car drivers go to if they have an accident). He grew up near a racetrack and in the winter, the kids would sled down the banked turns of the track.

At the age of 4, the family moved to Denver in 1944, his father worked at the Remington Arms plant but that only lasted 6 months do to the end of the War. In 1951, the family lived on Elati St. and Dave and Bob Schlageter terrorized the neighborhood. At 13, Dave’s dad told “Shorty” he could start crawling around in attics installing insulation. He could do 7 houses a day at $3/house. Dave attended several grade schools but graduated from Englewood High in 1959. Dave played football in H.S. with Dough Harder’s brother, Dave and somehow, Dave and Dave switched girlfriends.

Dave graduated from CSU with a major in Business Admin. And ROTC. In 1964, he joined the U.S. Air Force, went to flight school in Williams, AZ and served with the 352nd in Vietnam. After 6-1/2 years, he left the service in 1971 and since the airlines were laying pilots off, Dave got his Real Estate license and now does mostly commercial stuff. Dave earned the Bronze Star.

Dave married Karen Nov. 25th 1959 (50 years this Nov.) and they have 2 kids and 3 grandkids. Karen was a classmate of Dave’s and he is still active in the church they got married in. Bob Voth got Dave to join the South Suburban club in ‘72’, and then switched to Arapahoe. He was the President in ‘78’ and Governor in ‘95’. He has held all positions except secretary. He was also the Sertoman of the Year in 1991. Dave is a military history buff and he likes golf and auto racing, especially midgets. In Jan, he goes to OK to watch indoor racing. He also is a foster pet owner with 3 Greyhound’s.

Program:

The program today was Ethan Feldman, a Democratic candidate for the 18th Judicial District Attorney office. A former Chief Deputy Attorney for major crimes in the 18th Judicial District, has served 20 years as a judge in the 18th District and spent 12 years as an Attorney in private practice. This indicates he has extensive experience with all the different aspects of a courtroom.

Ethan began his legal journey when Bob Gallagher hired him as a legal intern. After a couple of eks, Ethan was summoned to Bob’s office where he was advised, “DO THE RIGHT THING NOW – NOW GET TO WORK.” He also credits Bob for teaching him and stressing to never allow political matters to influence courtroom proceedings and rulings.

Ethan related an early case wherein he was the prosecutor involving a young man (Chico) accused of personal assault. Chico was in court alone, his assigned defender and his parents all failed to show. Chico became his own defendant and when the time came he asked his accuser, “What color was my jacket?”. The response was brown to which Chico replied, “Wrong, it was green” The judge said “That’s good enough for me, case dismissed.” Ethan felt his career might be in peril, having lost a case to a young teenage boy.

Bob Gallagher enclosed a strong letter of endorsement, Click for copy.
