news_l6.gif SERTOMAN OF THE DAY:

None: Governor Steve Dawson filled this time slot with additional information concerning our upcoming Wine & Chocolate event.

Lacking an SOD, Dawson and Vierthaler chipped in $2.50 each making Glenn Combellick very great full.

Program:  Also double dipping Vierthaler introduced Todd McMann. Todd attended Lincoln High in Denver then later the University of Colorado. He has been with the Colorado Historical Society for 17 years as an archeologist. He indicated archeology to be a whole lot of hand digging Into unknown periods of history followed studying the artifacts uncovered.

Todd’s current project is to explore the ground at 12th and Broadway the building site for his agencies new office complex. First they research the history of the location. The land originally was owned by Henry Brown, best known for building the Brown Palace and donating the land for constructing our state capital building with the surrounding land to be the home sites of mansions for the wealthy.

Back in the 1890’s, row houses, mostly occupied by widows, stood at the dig site. Later, from the 1930’s through the 1950’s it became “auto row” including dealerships for vehicles only Combellick had ever heard of. Later it became part of our business district found along Broadway. The site now shows multiple home foundations from the early row houses which all include grease traps, outhouses and crawl spaces or cellars.
They have uncovered a multitude of family relics including; bits of china, toys, puppy bones and a gold ring. The society adopted this dig in support of Federal Agencies who are now legally obligated to perform an archeological dig whenever breaking ground for new building wherever applicable. Metal detectors have not been used at this site.

 Member Input Requested

Club Builders are critical volunteers and we are working to develop a new recognition program for their efforts.  We want the input of ALL members on this important effort.  Go to the Sertoma Blog for two opportunities to respond! You can write a comment to the questions from our President, Julie Hejtmanek, or complete a quick 2 minute survey – or you can do both. Remember you can always get to the Blog from the Sertoma Web Site.

Watch for more opportunities to provide input in the coming weeks.

Have you made your gift to the Annual Fund this year? Each year the Annual Fund directly supports our scholarship and grant programs. Last year we awarded 80 scholarships and $82,000 in grants. Help us continue to spread the good work of Sertoma – make your gift today.

The updated insurance manual for the coverage term of 9/1/09 to 8/31/10 is now available. This manual should be shared with all members in the club that deal with fundraising or volunteer events. The insurance agent should be notified of all club events using the General Liability and Liquor Liability forms found at the back of the manual. For events that occur every year the insurance agent must be supplied a new copy each year. The club should also keep a copy in their records.  Specific questions on coverage should be directed to the insurance agent .
