This weeks Reporter-Jim Perkins

Guests:    Ken Kelley introduced Mark Metevia, his new employee. There’s a great idea have club membership tied into the employment Package.

Announcements:  Scott Manley updated our upcoming golf tourney, the Arapahoe Sertoma Fall Golf Classic being held Tues. Sept. 6. 12 noon at the meadows golf course. (This is what I think Scott spoke of – given Scott’s extra soft voice and my diminished hearing it could have been anything; bowling, hiking, fishing or even golf.)

Jim Rees discussed a parade event being held by the City of Sheridan. Event will be held Sept 24th at 10AM-crew should plan to arrive at 9AM for preparation. Don’t forget to bring a min of 20lbs of ice to our trusty lemonade stand. If you think you might have raised your hand in a motion of volunteering, contact Jim for work details. Even for a tiny little hand rise be there. Even a twitch. THANKS JIM FOR ALL YOUR EXCELLENT WORK ON THIS

Rick Jacobus brought in a newspaper item. (Note: my being only a lowly substitute reporter the story will be much different than as Rick read it but I hope the point remains true.).

What do you call a bunch of birds hanging out together? - flock.
How about a bunch of geese – Gaggle
Now, a group of lions – Pride,
A whole crowd of Buffalo – Herd
A bunch of Looney Birds - Congress

Somewhere along the way Bill Benton disrupted everything to request the record show he did indeed distribute toothpicks.

May I have a drum roll please. Our big announcement for today is HAPPY RETIREMENT TO DON SMITH.

In his honor here’s a little verse:
- I’m not allowed to drive the train
- It’s whistle I can’t blow
- I’m not allowed to say how far the railroad cars will go
- I do not get to blow the horn
- Or even ring the bell
- But let one car jump the track and guess who catches hell!

Jim Rees has King Soopers coupons. The club receives 5% but only 4 people regularly use the service. The card is like a debit card so it’s easy to use.

Orion Hunter had advised he would not be able to attend so extra time was allotted to our program. This left Ken all alone at his table and reports indicate sightings of a few sighs and shudders along with a teardrop or two.

Program:   John Vierthaler introduced our program and miraculously held himself to a brief introduction. John introduced Fred Joseph, Colorado Securities Commissioner and Acting Bank Commissioner since 9-1-11.
Fred discussed various investment arenas but mainly stuck to forms of investment fraud including:

PUMP AND DUMP – Scammer starts with penny stocks and begins to inflate their sales value through various means of hype: talking, Internet, ads etc. Then when the stock reaches its zenith he cashes his stock in and disappears.

BOILER ROOM/BUCKET SHOPS – This is really an illegal brokerage firm using strong arm tactics or false information to sell high risk stocks. Think of rows and rows of telephones.

CHURNING – Broker or agent buys and sells your stocks at a very high turnover rate making commissions higher than they normally would be. This can happen when client gives agent a free hand.

UNREGISTERED SECURITIES – This type of promotion only benefits the seller and can contain many types of fraud.

INVESTMENT SEMINARS – Generally talented speakers putting pressure in the attendees. Target retired folks. If you like what you hear investigate first and purchase later if the deal is real.

Fred also covered Ponzi schemes. These date back to 1920.
A Ponzi scheme starts with a level of buyers who are paid dividends from monies from the next layer of buyers, who in turn will be paid by the next later, etc. until new buyer interest drops which is when the original seller exits with large sums of illicit cash. Some of the more adventurous forms involve: fake movies, non-existing writings or art, sports franchises, Broadway plays, & overseas projects.
Fred discussed some Ponzi criminal cases he is familiar with:

WILLIAM WALTERS – On the day of his indictment he fled to Argentina but being a slow learner he messed up again and they extradited him back to the USA where he was arrested, convicted and is currently a guest at a local prison.

SHAWN MILLER– He conned many including our own John Elway (believed to be $12 million).

MR. BIRD– Believed to be a devoted family man but got busted for running a Ponzi.

MR. BERRY – Received 20 years for financial fraud.

MIKE THE HIGH RISE MESS MAN – He sold and collected monies to build over 400 duplexes but built less than 50.

An excellent program thanks to Fred and John V with special thanks to Orion for the time grant.
