Permit me to take you into the heart of our #1 potential enemy – the USSR – our Cold War nemesis.

Living Lenin’s DREAM, the Realities of life under Communism / or “How we spied inside the USSR”.

The Cold War? The Cold War was a very serious, deadly competition between Moscow and Washington & our respective allies – that took us to the brink of WWIII on a couple of occasions.

It pitted two diametrically opposed political – socio economic systems against one another to capture the hearts, minds & souls of billions of people on the planet Earth. In our corner was Jeffersonian Republic Democracy & the economic theories of Adam Smith, combined with the precious freedoms we Americans take for granted. In the opposing corner, Moscow espoused their ideology of Communism based on Marxism-Leninism, & totalitarian rule. They believed that the only effective way to govern was by a tiny, hand-picked ruling elite that exercised total control over the masses from the cradle to the grave, frequently applying draconian methods.

During WWII the U.S. & USSR were allies fighting to defeat Nazi Fascism – Hitler’s’ form of Totalitarianism. That was reviled in both Moscow & the U.S. and our European allies.

The Cold War began a few months after we dropped A bombs on Hiroshima & Nagasaki in Aug. 1945 & Japan surrendered. It officially ended Xmas 1991 when M. Gorbachev called President Bush-I to inform him that the USSR no longer existed, & the CPSU had been outlawed.

During those 46 years of deadly competition the Soviets used surrogates to fight & die on foreign soil for their goal of a “World Socialist Revolution.” In order to prevent their conquest, we & our allies committed our national treasure of young men & women, & 100’s of billions of dollars.

Was it really a Cold War? The world held its breath during the Berlin Crisis of 1948-49, Korean War 1950-53, the Cuban Missile Crisis in the fall of 1962 (close to exchange of nuclear weapons), the Dominican Republic 1965-66, Vietnam 1961-75, & Grenada 1983. We, & history books call it the “Cold War”, but 145,165 American Military personnel died (in-theater & non-theater), & 257,020 were injured. By comparison, during four years of WWII, more then 405,000 died & 670,846 injured.
